a good place for us
We were a bit early - but that wasn't a problem. In fact we were upgraded to an upper corner room with 3 windows offering a breathtaking view over the Herault river to the cathedral, which, along with the bridge, is beautifully illuminated at night. Just a few turns from the train station and you are at the hotel. it's a busy street during peak periods, but not quite as loud as the quacking ducks in the river or rowers practicing...all quite entertaining by the riverbank below. the modern windows cancel most sound anyway. Genuinely friendly owners who aim to please but knowing a little French helps the guest. They recommended dinner at the floating barge directly across the river (the admiral) and it was good advice. Looked expensive but was actually good value, tasty and personable. We returned and were glad it was so close. A noteworthy site nearby is the Canal Du Midi turnaround with 3 spokes off it. Easy walk. From the nearby train station a bus takes you to Grau d'Agde, promenade, restaurants, beach and river mouth for the commercial fishery bordered by twin lights. Breakfast was spartan, but adequate. Loved the view from the room.
Under the Occitan sun.
After looking at "La Galiote" which I was anxious to avoid, I opted on the Araur. Paid 70 Euros per night and stayed two nights, no breakfast but a lovely bar nearby. Reception helpful, can speak some English, which with my French saw us get by. Nice air con room at front, sound of church bell lulled to sleep. Handy for the beach, station, town centre. TV French channels only and about a dozen channels. I was kindly offered a bottle opener for my wine plus a nice glass.
Friendly but very, very basic
The location is good, right on the river. That said it's on a main road so there is traffic noise. The people running the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very basic, probably haven't been refurbished for at least 20+ years. It's relatively inexpensive but given the quality, isn't great value. Breakfast again was basic; croissants, bread and a yogurt.
A lovely place to stay
The hotel owners are welcoming and very helpful. The hotel is bright and comfortable with a great location by the river, but only 5-10 mins easy walk from the station. I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Araur and I would recommend it highly.
Like coming home with friends
I have stayed at this hotel on and off for over three years and find Martine and Jerome excellent hosts. This is a small French hotel with great views across the river to the old city and Cathedral. As an Australian breakfast is a perfect French one to experience. The hotel is so clean and fresh - nothing too much bother for the hosts to do to help your stay in Agde, as arguably the oldest city in France take the time to cross the bridge and wander the old town. The hotel is perfect location for the bus service to the beaches and the train to anywhere in Europe. Shuttle bus to the airport five minute walk.
