Life is all about balance; we certainly appreciate a hard day’s work of collaborating with colleagues or sightseeing in the nation’s capital, but we also understand the value of unwinding and recharging at a welcoming spa, in a fine restaurant or in a lush guestroom that offers pampering without the pretension. For the price of the rooms and amenities provided, this hotel left a lot to be desired. After paying extra to reserve a room ahead of time, we were given an “upgrade” with a smaller bed and were refused a refund because the room was larger than the room we paid extra to reserve. On top of already not getting what we paid for, we reserved two appointments with the spa downstairs for massages. On this day, there was a really bad snow/ice storm, so I understand the spa being closed due to inclement weather. What I don’t understand is the unprofessionalism that I experienced trying to figure out if the spa was even open that day. I checked my emails and my phone to see if I received anything telling me that they would be closed or need to reschedule, so I proceed to go down to the spa. It’s obviously closed, so I go to the front desk and have to stand there and wait for about 5 minutes before someone finally comes up to the front desk. No one is able to tell me if the spa is open or not. No one is able to get in contact with anyone. And then a manager finally pops up and she doesn’t know much more information than the front desk person which is honestly inexcusable. Turns out the spa was closed. They didn’t do anything about it except look at me like deer in headlights. It is unprofessional and unorganized to not know what is going on in your hotel when your name is literally “Lorien Hotel and SPA”. We were snowed in. The roads were bad. The sidewalks were icy. This is not somewhere you want to be when the weather is bad. The satellites on the TV were down for about 8 hours, so if we didn’t have our laptops we would have been up the creek without a paddle. The food in the restaurant downstairs is subpar. And the community toiletries in the bathrooms? Big yikes. This is a huge disappointment and we will not be staying here again. We tried to talk to management about the experience and she couldn’t have cared less. Hotel Indigo is the place to be.

At a certain price point, expectations are higher. First off the front desk staff and valet were very nice, but they may be understaffed as I had to wait a fairly significant amount of time for someone to appear at the front desk at check in, and I was the only one in the lobby for a while. Although I had requested when making a reservation to not be near the elevator, I was placed immediately across from the elevator. Room cleanliness and appearance was average, definitely not on par with what I'd expect from a Kimpton or that level of hotel. I'm not expecting a Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons, but the room was comparable to a well managed off the interstate type hotel. The communal bulk toiletry dispensers in the shower are a bit creepy. Overall I would consider staying there again, but will look at other options first.

We were scheduled to stay 3 nights in a suite (estimated cost for those nights was almost $1400 excluding parking). When we arrived and pulled out the sofa bed, it barely fit the room, and actually hit the door of the closet. The sofa bed had to be pushed way back against the windows to open all the way (leaving the closet totally blocked). The sofa bed was so uncomfortable we decided to only stay one night. We also learned that since valet was not available, parking was in a garage nearby. We asked if overnight parking on the street was allowed, and were told they weren't sure. So we drove to the garage, which was in an unlit area, not secured in any way, and only one other car was parked there. As two women, we did not feel safe at all to leave our car there and walk back in a dark area. We ended up learning that overnight parking on the street was in fact permitted, and parked there instead. It would have been nice to know that from the beginning. I gave the front desk clerk my parking permit and let them know we didn't use the hotel's parking; I was still charged $25 for parking at checkout, and had to get that charge removed. We also noticed that the courtyard area was a huge mess that night after people went out there for snacks and drinks. By the time we checked out around 10:30 AM, it was still a disaster. Not a great look for a luxury hotel. We checked out and booked another nearby hotel, which had much safer parking options, a more spacious room, better service, and a much more comfortable sofa bed (and the room was $100 less per night). Overall, we are really disappointed with our experience at the Kimpton.

Great stay in Old Alexandria. The room size was good and staff very accommodating. The restaurant was great for dinner. We could feel the effects of Covid during our stay by the lack of valet and no breakfast service at the hotel. Our arrival was rather dismal as we had to find our way to underground parking garage which was not at all inviting or attractive, then in the employee entrance to finally get to the lobby. Also, no bellman to assist with luggage. Staff tried very hard to make it as convenient as possible. We would have had an even better impression if we could have had valet/bellman parking as the street side of the hotel has a lovely entrance. It was a bit far for us to walk to the heart of Old Alexandria, but there is a free trolley - or it's an $8.00 Uber ride. Had to ask for robes & coffee maker, but they were promptly provided

The check in was fairly smooth although I had an issue. I was told that the hotel accepted cash and was given cash to pay but eventually it was taken care of. The room is very spacious and came with disinfecting wipes on the desk. There was also an umbrella and yoga mat in the room. There were large bottles of shampoo, body wash and conditioner as well as a soap and a small bottle of cream in the bathroom. There were 2 issues I had with the room namely the AC which would make a loud noise when it shut off after reaching a certain temperature I assume. There were also problems with the keys from time to time and the lock once. The staff especially the receptionists were amazing!! They helped me with taxis, finding restaurants, printing documents and any other assistance I needed. The location is absolutely perfect for touring and dining it is within walking distance of everything.
