‘Would be’ wedding night away
Me and my fiancé stayed here on the 30th December for one night. Our wedding was cancelled so we decided to have a nice little trip for our anniversary. Despite the new tier announcement, the hotel staff couldn’t have done enough for us- they were very helpful and welcoming! We had a lovely fine dining experience and breakfast (which was included in the rate), was lovely too! We enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be returning!
Wonderful stay over xmas
Lovely hotel. Fine dining and food and service wonderful. Cosy lounges with open log fires. Nice rooms and very comfortable beds. Very high standard and small touches made it special. Great location. Would recommend
Dinner five course taster menu
Absolutely superb from start to finish. Five courses (plus extra in between courses) and paired wines. Delicious. Loved that we got to choose the courses too. Spectacular. A lovely cosy restaurant open fire and superb service. Best meal of the trip.
A gem of a hotel in the heart of Central Lakes
Beautiful countryside hotel in the heart of the Lakes. Great location - 5 mins walk from central Ambleside where there are heaps of amazing restaurants and bars, ten mins drive to Grasmere/Hawkshead and ideally situated for accessing the starting points for the majority of the Cumbria’s amazing hiking and outdoor activities eg Grizedale forest, Ullswater, Windermere. Ample parking within the grounds of the hotel. Cosy but luxe ambience throughout, common areas exceptionally clean - hotel felt very “Covid compliant”. Tastefully decorated rooms with massive, comfy beds. Excellent breakfast in the morning - staff were great at accommodating any tweaks to the menu to suit our tastes. A bit on the pricey side overall but well worth it in our opinion. Nice little touches including fresh cookies in your room each day and a Nespresso coffee machine. Some constructive “niggles” (yes, we’re nit-picking but only because I think this place has the potential to become a 5-star hotel in time:) 1. Improve the lighting outside the hotel. Was very difficult to see as the grounds have little lighting, making coming back in from the car late in the evening/upon returning from a walk into village centre somewhat tricky. I get that the hotel ideally wants to keep you there in the evening so that you dine in their restaurant/drink in their bar but it would have been nice not to have to rely on iPhone torches to get around outside... 2. A better hairdryer in the room - as with many hotels, it was woefully underpowered. Everything else in the room felt relatively high-end. 3. A better selection of teas in the room eg peppermint 4. Offer room service - we had expected this given Covid as makes it easier to socially distance if able to eat in room
Long Service Gem
As a hotel, hard to fault. We had a lovely room overlooking the garden. It was spacious, had a large balcony (bit wasted as a feature in December) and was comfortably furnished. The bathroom was large, the water pressure was low – making the shower somewhat underpowered – the low-level automatic LED light was a cleaver feature. It was really nice to have proper coffee (and something of a mystery why this was not a feature downstairs). The intranet is packed with features and, once you have got the hang of it, provides access to lots of information. The local walks section is very well done. Breakfast was excellent. A fry-up is a fry-up but Rothay Manor’s is a particularly good one. The only negative was the coffee – cafetieres are no substitute for a coffee machine. Dinner was pleasant enough but, perhaps, emphasised presentation over balance. We were left wanting a little less richness. Potato, rice, pasta have a place! Staff were efficient and friendly. Lots of good Covid awareness, though pdf menus to be read on phone screens is not ideal, nor is a shared tablet. The breakfast menu on waterproof, wipeable paper was a low-tech but better solution. All in all, an excellent hotel in a good location.
