Fantastic stay and special mention for Olie! 🌟

Reviewed 12 may, 2022

I have had a brilliant experience at the hotel in Old Amersham with some lovely food specifically desserts and a lovely variety for breakfast. A special mention for Olie, Bar Supervisor, as his service was always wonderful and always had a smile on his face. Thank you for being brilliant! :)

Quirky is not always good

Reviewed 12 may, 2022

The hotel certainly satisfies the ‘quirky’ category. However… We were given room 7, a standard heritage room over the bar. The room itself was an adequate size for one night, but really needed a refurb. The furniture was dark mahogany coloured MDF and would have been more at home in an office than a bedroom. As the small casement window only lets in a minimal amount of light the furniture made the room even darker. It was a good job we didn’t take our cat with us, as the tiny bathroom did not offer any space to swing one. The bathroom floor had two steps in it, one right by the small washbasin which added to the fun of staying on one’s feet. The shower was small – elbows suffered knocks – but the water pressure was very good which was pleasing. Unfortunately the temperature control was stuck on hot and couldn’t be moved. Just to keep one on one’s toes the water occasionally went from very hot to scalding. The bed was comfortable with nice quality linen. As the room was hot and the duvet winter weight we opened the window and were kept awake until the last people left the bar – but that’s what you must expect from a front facing room. We would have liked to dine in the restaurant but there was only veggie main which I didn’t fancy so we ate in the bar, which was OK but not the most relaxing atmosphere. We found it quite surprising that one young man (in a group) came in with a sack of takeaway Indian, got a plate from the barman and proceeded to eat said takeway at the table! Our food was good – hot and tasty. Breakfast was hot but greasy, and the coffee weak. The staff were friendly enough but not anything more than I would have expected. One thing we couldn’t understand – the building dates from the 1400s and is full of old world features as one would expect. Why then had someone decided it was in the best possible taste to festoon the ancient beams in the bar and restaurant with fairy lights? They added nothing to the atmosphere and took away much of the integrity of the building. All in all we would not stay there again, and I would certainly warn anyone with any kind of balance or mobility issue to think twice before staying.

Beautiful historic hotel with fantastic staff and a warm welcome

A stunning 15th century coaching Inn, the Kings Arms rooms have been lovingly updated, but take nothing away from the original decor and design. We stayed 2 nights for a special birthday in a heritage room. The room was advertised through Hotels.com as having slippers and daily newspaper. However, they did not have this (and if you check on the hotel's website, they don't promise these). They did leave a small chocolate bar with a picture of the hotel and happy birthday printed on for my husband. A nice thought but I think he was hoping for one of their small bottles of red wine instead. The hospitality tray is great. We really enjoyed the Nespresso machine and capsules. And they are replenished daily. I arranged a champagne afternoon tea as a surprise for my husband. This was supposed to be in the Wyvern restaurant, but it was booked for a private event so they served us in the bar. We didn't mind because it was still beautiful, intimate and with great service. And they tailored the tea to my dietary needs. Definitely recommended. We stayed in room 5. It was a large room. Very nice and a stunningly decorated. Unfortunately, it was very noisy in the morning from 5.40am as its over the kitchens (and we wear earplugs to sleep in). It was exacerbated because of the fire alarm, blaring intermittently until 2am on our first night. The staff worked hard to resolve this quickly and it was caused by a guest smoking in their room and then using the alarmed fire exit (which guests are clearly told not to do at check in). Due to the fire alarm and noisy kitchen staff we only got a couple of hours sleep. However, this is where the Kings Arms excels. Their staff are very attentive and apologised for our poor night's sleep. The manager even arranged a small compensation, and they spoke to the kitchen staff who were quiet the next morning - for which we would like to thank them. The staff are the gem of this hotel. They do make you feel special, and really want to ensure you have a great stay. The hotel has a lovely, warm welcoming feel to it. It feels very special. It's in the centre of Old Amersham, so very convenient for exploring. Breakfast is good. I think there could be a vegan option advertised on the menu, but they did tailor my order to make it vegan, so no problem. We would definitely stay at this hotel again, but will book directly through the hotel next time.

Such a pity

Great service staff but unfortunately they are let down by the poor quality of the accommodation which was grubby, unkempt and desperately in need of a major interior overhaul. This hotel and its sister property, the Crown, both need some money spending on them
