Cute, affordable but rude staff

The hotel is comfortable, cute decor, and very affordable. It was a bit dirty. My sock bottoms went grey from the flooring and there was hair on the shower walls. However the check in and out staff were very rude. Didn't smile or use please, thank you or anything. I wasn't told to have a good day and when I told them to have a good day they glared and grunted.
The University Inn is a very good hotel with staff working there!

I stayed in the room 207 for three months in 2020. The room is pleasant, there is all furniture one needs. A lady and guys in front desk were very kind with me. Whenever I had a request they strived to help me. It is a very nice hotel and staff. A quiet and safe place, kind staff, fresh air, beautiful nature! If I had a chance to come back to Ann Arbor I would definitely stay in University Inn.
Not what I expected

I booked this hotel on the recommendation of a local friend who had stayed here several times in the past. After arriving on property, and checking-in, I decided to leave. The staff at the desk was extremely respectful and courteous and cancelled my reservation (I booked through booking.com) I received a full refund without having to pay any cancellation fee. The only reason I am giving a 2/5 review is this desk staff... I walked upstairs to the room, and walked back to get items out of my car, I noticed a used syringe and some pills in the stairwell. I believe that with the low-demand for hotels in the pandemic, a rougher crowd has taken advantage of the lower prices and an advertised monthly rate. Perhaps in a non-pandemic visit things would be better. My room was clean, but the room is zero frills. A very small TV 18-21" and a lamp, desk, minifridge, and microwave. I was traveling by myself and just did not feel safe due to the crowd and evidence of the drug presence. Again, I think that this could be a temporary situation. Kudos to the desk staff for being understanding and professional.
Close to family

Chose to stay here because it was super close to a family member’s condo. We stayed in Room 100. It was more private than the others because it was on the end. There were outside table and chairs, which was nice. The room faces a playground/picnic type area, so might have only been private because it was Winter. Kitchen: stove, fridge, small coffee maker, big sink, and random dishes/utensils. The fridge did not have an ice maker, so had to go to main office for that. Coffee pot was starting to rust on the bottom, but was good enough. Small bar with 2 barstools. Bathroom: heater on wall didn’t seem to work but it was not too cold in there, bathroom sink took a really long time to generate hot water, encountered 2 spiders (one was tiny and one long legged), tiny shampoo & soap provided (I recommend bringing your own soap/shampoo/conditioner/lotion), no hair dryer in room but was able to get one from front desk. Heater/register worked but would click on and off throughout the night (which woke me up), bed was comfortable enough, television was not the best (the edges of the picture were missing so couldn’t see game scores), small futon next to bed. Closet was small but had hangers. There was a desk with a mirror on the wall (although would recommend bringing your own makeup mirror). We did not wake up early enough for continental breakfast, so can’t comment. Staff was friendly. They have Wifi but not the best. Room was pretty musty. If you are sensitive to mold, would not recommend staying in the room we were in. Not sure about the other rooms, this was our first stay.
Good budget motel

There was a lot to like about this motel. It was clean and conveniently located next to Trader Joes. With a microwave and fridge in the room, this made it easy to fix my own meals and save money on eating out. A few negatives, the room and bedding smelled strongly of fragrance - air freshener or laundry products. Not my preference. And the motel building is old and somewhat dingy, not as bright and cheery as the photos. Also the door to my room didn't close well, the lock was a little wonky and the vertical blinds had gaps so not completely private when closed. Still, the motel was affordable and quiet. The bed was comfortable and made for a good night's sleep which is really what you need when you're travelling.
