More about the hotel
Location is the selling point
We drove up from Scottsdale and needed one night to stay so we could wake up and watch the sunrise at the Grand Canyon. With the exception of staying inside the park, you can’t beat how close this hotel is to the south entrance. Plenty of free parking. The lobby is nice, has a very rustic western lodge decor with a grand fireplace and lots of animal busts on the wall. We booked a 2-Queen bed deluxe room and requested a roll-away bed, as we were 3 single friends traveling together. I have no idea what made this room deluxe, because it was a tiny room. There was a desk and chair cramped into the space, but otherwise no other seating options. After reading some of the other reviews, I’m now wondering if we were put in the wrong kind of room? I would suggest booking a suite, which we should have done. Our linens were in a black plastic bag, and there was no trash can in the bathroom. My bed was comfortable enough, but I slept next to the heater which made me too hot. The room wasn’t cold, and seeing as the outside temps were 16 degrees f, I understand why the heater seemed to be constantly blowing. We stayed for a total of 12 hours just to rest before getting into the park bright and early. All in all, if you simply need a place to sleep, The Grand will be fine, but don’t expect any luxury.
Great Hotel
Very nice! Comfortable. Very nice staff. The restaurant is just ok. Their wine list is a little “cheap” and lacks taste. I also feel like they should serve coffee a bit earlier. The rooms are very nice, clean and comfortable. The parking lot is safe and well lite. Super close to the Grand Canyon southern rim. Highly recommended!
Great location, friendly staff and comfortable room
The location of the hotel was great. It was less than 10 minutes to the South entrance of the Park. Staff was very friendly and the food was decent in the restaurant. Having never been to the Grand Canyon I didn't know what to expect in terms of location but it was very convenient as it was so close to the South entrance to the Grand Canyon. This is about as close as you can get to the Park without staying within the gates. The hotel was very clean and all the staff was extremely friendly. When booking, I read that they charged extra for a portable bed. I still requested one but I brought an inflatable mattress for our 5 year old. But they provided it and didn't charge any additional for it. Our daughter loved it. It WAS tight in the room with the 2 queen beds and the portable twin bed but we were just going to sleep and shower as we were in the park busy for 3 days. The room had a microwave oven and a small fridge which was convenient. I booked the room on Booking.com and paid $335 a night. I thought this was on the expensive side but we went end of December and it was very busy. In fact, even at night there were people waiting in line to check-in. The woman at check-in said they were completely booked solid for the entire week before and the week after my stay. We booked the hotel for 2 nights and it was a perfect amount of time to visit the park. The restaurant in the hotel was decent but it was very busy as it was one of the only nice restaurants in town. They also had a bar that had take out food that you could take to your rooms. They also had a hotel gift shop to buy souvenirs. We didn't pack swim trunks but if I had to do it again I would have brought some. They have a nice indoor pool with jacuzzi. They limit it to 10 people at a time which is nice. It wasn't too busy the entire time we went. The hotel was sold out our entire stay but we still didn't have problems parking. They also have a Tesla Supercharger right in the parking lot if you have a Tesla. I'd definitely highly recommend this hotel and would stay here again. The only negatives were there was no trash can in the bathroom and the room was a bit dark. Also, the biggest negative was the HDMI didn't work in the back of the TV. We travel with young kids and at the end of a long day sometimes it's nice to put a movie on to wind down but it didn't work at all.
Mishandled our reservation
We reserved a deluxe room for the family months in advance of our vacation to the Grand Canyon. We had received a confirmation email days ahead of the trip. When we arrived at the property at 9:30 PM, the woman at the desk notified us that unfortunately someone had seemingly checked into our room under our name earlier in the evening. She said she couldn’t understand how this could’ve occurred; however, that she does not wish to go to the room to check as she “did you know what you would find.” Meanwhile, we were waiting in lobby for 30 minutes and several odd types were walking around (and without masks - At the height of COVID). She offered to call around to other hotels instead of attempting to rectify the situation. We then asked for additional options. She contacted her supervisor which was offsite who recommended she put us in a smaller room, the only one available. We again requested that she ask security or maintenance to check the room. They finally did and it turned out the room was empty and luckily we were able to sleep the night. We were thoroughly freaked out. They were less than resourceful and ready to kick us out into the cold essentially instead of putting forth any effort. No apologies at all and certainly no intent to compensate. We canceled the subsequent nights and moved on as we simply didn’t feel comfortable at this hotel.
You dont get what you pay for
Tried to enjoy Xmas week here with Family but ahay es no bueno indeed; ALL their T.V.'s dont allow for video game console connection / source buttons so bring your own t.v. if you want to play video games etc. At an expensive hotel, big fancy beautiful Gym was closed, no housekeeping, no trashcans in the bathroom, not enough toilet paper, no Christmas tree as shown in advertisement, no free continental traditional breakfast you have to pay 10$ for a small dried up biscuit, pool not available 24/7 which it should be since theres no gym available, wooden blinds leading to back patio was torn / damaged and back door to patio wasnt sealed properly so that cold air at night is blowing under and around the door, the whole experience was totally overpriced and could have enjoyed more at a cheap hotel for basic amenities not provided. The Grand Hotel isnt so grand afterall and will not return here again
