Really run down
Everything feels run down, and I didn't have confidence the shower rug was actually new for me since it was already in place. Ditto for the sheets and blankets -- did I really get new blankets? The blanket was light, and the radiator didn't work, so I had to wear my jack and socks to bed. So yeah, it's pretty much like something out of Psycho. The coolest thing about the place was the huge old hotel lobby and cool staircase. But once you are in your room it's pretty lame.
Absolutely loved it
I love old homes and antiques. When I saw the pervious reviews I was a little worried, but for the price I figured I can't go wrong. The building is beautiful, the street is brick, it has a wrap around porch that is slanted like the old days. A cast iron sink and tub. The rooms are pretty small but I loved it as you can really tell it is an old building. I will definitely stay again. Yes it could have been cleaner, it could have had amenities that other hotels have but for me it would have taken away from the "old" feel of the building.
Excellent value for the money
I spent (3) nights in the St. Louis room on the second floor. Expect a youth hostel environment with long term residents and young folks. They have room with old bathtubs that have been completely remodeled. If you are looking to stay in a 100 year old historic property in decent condition, this is the place. 24 hour coffee and cookies from a coffe can. Fresh towels, soap and shampoo in the lobby. Wireless wifi in the lobby. Basic cable with HBO. I stay in hotels 300 nights a year. This was a good value.
Run down and dirty
We were told this was a great hotel, as all the rooms had themes. Our room was the Presidential Suite, OMG, the name was where it started and finished. The room was dirty. The shower curtain had black mold from top to bottom. The wall paper was hanging off the wall. The small amount of plates and glasses that were in the room were sticky and greasy. There is no heating or cooling. It is also located quite close to the train track, with trains running all thought the night, constantly blaring the horn as they go through the town. If there are no other rooms available in this town, I would recommend driving the 10 miles back to Missouri Valley IA, than staying here.
BIG CAUTION THIS PLACE IS FILTHY DO NOT STAY HERE
We were traveling from Iowa to Washington state and were not sure in advance how far we would make it this day. Seeing that we would make it to Blair, Nebraska, we checked our GPS for the names of hotels in the area. The Clifton Hotel [formerly Landmark, as listed in the GPS] seemed like a good choice. I called to make a reservation and said we were looking for a clean room. The manager said, "Oh, yes, the rooms are very clean and I have the John Wayne suite available." She also said the building was the oldest in Blair. The building itself surely was a grand, old building at one time, but it would take extensive renovation and $$$ to bring it back to its original state. The lobby had a popcorn machine and old popcorn was strewn on the floor. The stairs to the room were dirty and I only hoped the room would be different. Well it wasn't. It was filthy. And a toilet lid cover? Gross. I bring sheets, a blanket, and a can of Lysol when I travel, just in case we get into just this kind of situation. Dust was visible on all the surfaces, the bed had old linty flannel sheets on it and two mismatched pillows and pillow cases. I cleaned any surface we may dare to touch -- a table, a kitchenette counter, the switch plates, and of course the toilet. Talk about filthy! The hotel towel was black with dirt. This place was not only dusty, it was absolutely filthy. Why didn't we demand our money back and walk out? I don't know, except we were so tired. Even if the owners lack funds to restore this place, a good cleaning would make it bearable, especially at $40 a night. Sad.
