Great place to stay and eat

Reviewed 27 november, 2021

Stayed for a couple of nights as a base to visit Hadrian’s Wall and a few other local attractions. The room was nice, very comfy bed, nice bathroom - not enormous but very cosy. Breakfast was excellent, a good amount of choice and more than happy to make tweaks to accommodate dietary requirements (and remember them at subsequent meals). Ate in the restaurant on the Friday night, it was fairly quiet but shouldn’t be as the food was outstanding. The scallops starter is up there in the best starters I’ve had.

Superb little find. Great for a one night stop. The highlight was the food in the restaurant. One of the best fish pies I can remember! Rooms comfortable and well appointed. Nice lounge and bar area all very cosy. Good location close to Hadrian’s Wall and other walks.

Bit annoyed

Me and my partner came here, we sat down with our drinks at a table with no reservation sign on as there was 2 tables that had them, after starting our drinks some grumpy women who must be manager/owner came over and asked us to move as the table just got reserved, 5 minutes later a group of four came in and got asked what table they wanted to sit in the one we were sat in or a different one. To top it of we ordered a drink before we left and she came running over typing on the machine and swear we got ripped off. Saw lots of full plates going back so don't be mislead by all the pictures of what looks like good food. Will definitely not be visiting this place again definitely worst place I have been to in a very long time, learn how to treat your customers, BTW both bar men were very nice and great with customers maybe they should teach her a thing or to.

Mixed dining experience

Very quiet midweek one night visit. Cheaper to go through booking.com than hotel website. Lovely setting. Nice room with a small double bed = zero sleep. The bar area is small and cozy and the staff are nice. The food is v expensive and a bit mixed - steak (£35) was good vegetarian risotto £20 was stodgy., vegetables a mixture of al dente and raw. Food 3 stars

Can't fault the hospitality, welcoming and go out of there way to ensure that you are ok. Meals at String of horses are 10 out of 10. I would recommend staying there. Location is good. Can be used as a good base for visiting other parts of Cumbria, Newcastle, and Durham
