We really enjoyed out stay at the Astra and in Broken Hill!
The Astra is a (nicely-renovated) old-style country pub. There are about 10-15 rooms upstairs above the public bar and restaurant. Our room (a deluxe room) was very spacious and well appointed. The room was well insulated (and air conditioned) and we were not bothered by any of the noise downstairs from the bar. Interestingly, the only external windows/doors on our room opened up onto the balcony which was the hotel's private function area. Fortunately, there we no functions happening during our stay and it meant we could open the doors and sit and have a glass of wine looking down the main street. Had there been a function occurring, it would have been a different story and I don't know I would be so thrilled with the balcony of my room being dual purposed! The location is great - it's on the main street and we had no trouble finding parking on the next cross street. The hotel has restaurants which we ate at and really enjoyed the food there. Given the small number of rooms, check out was self service, but the guy working at the bar was helpful and took the key - we were simply emailed our bill and it was all pretty easy. Would gladly stay again. My only gripe is that I couldn't find the wifi password.
Gorgeous place to stay.
We booked a Deluxe Suite for 2 nights and it was fantastic. Huge room with a separate walk in wardrobe, bathroom with a huge spa, and a great desk. The only things I could possibly change is to have a decent chair for the desk as the current one is too low and make the huge shared balcony more inviting to guests. The balcony had a few tables and chairs that I suspect hadn't been cleaned for a while as there were buckets of empty drink bottles. Apart from that, nothing to fault. Reception staff went out of their way to make us welcome, breakfast in the adjoining cafe was lovely. Fantastic central location. Couldn't find onsite parking but there is so much free parking on the street this is not a problem. All in all, highly recommended!
Dinner & Breakfast
It’s a good thing I don’t live in Broken Hill or I’d be in here all the time, drinking their fab cocktails, eating the excellent food and delicious cakes. We were passing through one evening and stopped in for dinner, well after many other places seemed to have stopped serving, a veritable oasis with a great vibe, great staff, tasty food and some interesting and well priced drinks. It was all too easy to overindulge after a long day in the car and we enjoyed every second of it. A week or so later on a rainy morning, it was the perfect spot for an early breakfast (read 7.30am). Some interesting dishes on the menu such as the mushroom ragu as well as the usual bacon and eggs etc. You also had the ability to order and add sides to get exactly the breakfast you wanted. Again, good vibe in the café, great staff and tasty food. Will definitely be dropping in again before we leave town!
Breakfast & Dinner.
We ate breakfast twice and dinner 2 at the Astra. Food was excellent. I'd go there again when visiting Broken Hill. Value for money. Staff were exceptional. Extremely friendly and helpful. A couple of the more experienced staff who were in our age bracket sat down with us and provided first hand information about Broken Hill and places to visit.
Dinner
Recently had dinner 2 consecutive nights & on both occasions it was lovely. Varied food & drink menu reasonable priced. Bar staff were amazing. Atmosphere was great. Highly recommend. Thank you so much.
