Let down by covid
Was looking forward to coming to this hotel being 4 star, but coming here when there is a virus going around was a mistake. We booked a executive room first thing was no tea / coffee, no toiletries in the bathroom. The Ala carte restaurant closed so no special breakfast. Two coffees in the bar almost 5 euros. The lunch time menu del día was the same in the evening, which did not include a drink and at 16 euros was not worth it, food was below par. On the plus side the staff in the restaurant were very friendly and did a great job and the air conditioning in the bedroom was very good.
Green oasis of Algeciras
This hotel was built as a resort by the end station of failway by sir Alexander Henderson who also founded the building of railway line from Madrid to Algeciras. Algeciras means The green island, and it was a renowned sea resort by that time. Originally the building had only 2 floors and was rather small, hotel accommodated then many important events of the region and welcomed many distinguished guests. Later on, hotel had burned and was restored in a bigger size, and after that more floors and vings were build on. Hotel has picturesque common spaces, in style and with touch of 30s, live music in the lobby, indoors and outdoors pool, and a wonderful well-maintained gardens, the biggest green space in Algeciras. Rooms are all of different shapes and sizes, with different views. Rooms in the older buildings are most interesting, with calm garden views or seaview (some obstructed bythe buildings by the shore). Hotel has a restaurant serving breakfast and halfboard, good and convenient choice, there are no other dining options nearby. There is about 20 minutes walk to the train station along the uneaven surface and traffiked streets, and about 15 minutes walk to the ferryterminal of Algeciras.
Stumbled on this hidden gem
Our trip from further north (November 2019) wasn't planned and we found Globales Reina Cristina by pure chance thanks to T.A. only as we approached Algeciras. Ten minutes after booking from the road we were checking in and they had the booking! Great stay, pleasant room with a balcony at a bargain price. Fabulous setting in mature grounds of the original hotel. I gather that the owners specialise in renovating period hotels and they had done a fabulous job on this one. We also ate in the restaurant. The food was quite basic, but local and good. (After a happy, laughing bit of banter, the waitress somehow managed to explain that one of the dishes was a local, chickpea stew, which was eaten and very much enjoyed). Breakfast was very good and extensive and we left Reina Cristina with nothing but good memories and at a very good price. I couldn't fault it and its magnificent turn-of-the-century feel and furnishings.
An enjoyable 2 night stay
We loved the traditional olde world charm of the hotel, which was chosen for it's location and parking. We used it as a base for a day trip to Morocco, as the shuttle to Tarifa is a very easy 10 minute walk from the hotel. We arrived late afternoon from Gibraltar, and ate from the simple, but adequate 3 course menu in the restaurant on our first night, ate from the bar menu on the 2nd night, and had two good breakfasts included in with the room rate. Our room, for a couple and young teen, was a good size, clean and with nice linens. It was obvious that some refurbishing had started, but certainly there is a need to tidy up some hallways and carpeting. Nothing terrible in a hotel of ours age, but just time to continue on with renovations. We enjoyed it, felt comfortable and safe there, and would stay again.
A very enjoyable stay in a very authentic hotel.
The hotel is steeped in history and full of character and charm. The staff are all extremely nice and helpful. The food was excellent whether you were having breakfast, lunch, dinner or even a bar food option. Great value for money all around. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner of the hotel who went above and beyond to make us feel very welcome and enjoy our stay even further. We will be back.
