Good and Bad
Good: -Extremely nice and friendly employees who are very respectful and polite, who try hard to please. They appreciate the tips, even if it’s a dollar, unlike other resorts like the Oasis. - Good breakfast buffet with lots of choices. -Nice rooms with a filled refrigerator with lots of cold water and beer. A safe that works well and is secured. -fabulous room balconies with a gorgeous view of the ocean -Great fitness center filled with terrific equipment. -Friendly front desk, especially the supervisor and others. Bad: -Terrible lunch and dinner buffets with no variety and mediocre quality. We could only eat the food for 3 days. -Steak restaurant is the buffet area with small steaks that are thin. -Terribly cold pools. They should be heated. -Terrible room air conditioner that pumps out overly humid air that is disgusting. -1970s TV with outdated technology and poor rice and quality. Very strange for a hotel like this. Don’t be cheap! -Terrible late night sports bar food that is hideously disgusting. Nasty hamburgers, hot dogs and nacho cheese that is watery with no flavor. Makes 7 Eleven nachos cheese gourmet. How disgusting. Don’t be cheap! How low quality food. Worse than anybody can get in a prison cell. Terrible margaritas? How can margaritas made in the USA with Mr and Mrs. Ts Margarita Mix taste better than in Mexico? Shame on you. Overall the trip was ok, but the food is boring with no variety. Mixed drinks such a margaritas taste terrible. The employees are very nice. Much nicer than the rude ones at the Grand Oasis Cancun. We might not come back because of above.
Really disappointed
I stayed at the Cancun Riu from Dec 30 -Jan 4th, 2021. I had two rooms on the 12th floor. During the trip, my husband could not find his Apple watch. He had it when we arrived and then could not find it. We thought perhaps he lost it. I am also missing my Michael Kors sunglasses. I know they were stolen by someone who came in the room because my glasses were in a sunglass case in my luggage. I never took them out to use them and only found out they were missing when I unpacked. I can only assume my husband's watch was taken from our room as well. I sent an complaint email. I do not expect my items back, but would like a response. Besides that, the pool was cold, there is a lot of shade. The beach is small. The sand volleyball was nice but tons of people from other hotels. They were VERY competitive so if you just want to have fun, I would not participate. Lots of young singles ready to party and look good on social media. We like to party but the overly made up girls and body builder guys are too much for us. The elevators are a nightmare as others have stated. They do have stairs which are handy, but 12 flights is a LOT. We learned to walk up a few floors and then catch the elevator there. The guys at the restaurant were extremely nice and the highlight of the trip. The guys at the sports bar also awesome. Also, you can catch the bus across the road on the one way going South and it will take you to the bar area and the shopping plaza. There are a couple nice restaurants on the lagoon side.
World Class Experience!
We stayed for a weeks time and every aspect of the experience was exceptional! From customer service, cleanliness/professionalism, entertainment staff and nightlife, Riu Cancun nailed a 10/10. On behalf of fellow Americans who had 13 years to learn Spanish as a youngster and only know how to ask for the bathroom, shame on you... at least show some effort to speak their native language! Mexicans are experts in hospitality and they really go above and beyond to make this destination the best. Gringos should be so" fortunate" to at least get away from our "circus reality aka PLANdemic" and be able to relax in this beautiful paradise.. how dare any of you criticize their staff, food, etc... how about using your voices to effect some meaningful change back in the states that helps to improve our society and quality of life... If you do not like Mexico, adios amigos, stop giving the USA a bad name abroad! Great work Riu Cancun, we will be back soon.
Disappointed
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. This is a beautiful property, with friendly waiters and lovely entertainment staff. HOWEVER, the food service and restaurants are HORRIBLE. The website advertises the resort with 6 restaurants but they are never open except for 2 of them that are a buffet (same buffet 2 entrances and they call them 2 restaurants). Breakfast at the buffet is good. But lunch n dinner food from the buffet is the worst food i have ever had in any resort in my life. The steak house restaurant is not a real restaurant, it is a few tables located in the back part of the buffet and it only opens fr 2-3hrs on certain days, they dont accept prior reservations, and if you get there 20 mins before closing they wont let you in. The rooms are beautiful but the towels are old and ripped off. Towels do not get changed on daily basis even if you leave them on the floor. The staff at the reception desk are NOT FRIENDLY and do not make any effort to make the customer satisfied. We stayed for 4 nights but had to extend 1 extra night due to covid regulations. We had to get covid tested 3 days prior to departure, due to the change in plans we needed a second test and The front desk staff refused to accommodate for a Second test even though we had made a second reservation for the extra day. Trying to call the front desk is very hard. They dont have the regular 0 option to call but and extension number where they hardly pick up. I had to walk in many occasions to request help.
Great food, good drinks and excellent service
We stayed over New Years, which was a bit mad & very busy as you would expect but cannot fault the place & really don’t know what people are complaining about! COVID wise, hygiene throughout the hotel was impeccable, hand sanitiser everywhere, masks worn @ all times & temperature checks when entering all restaurants. Food was amazing & service was above & beyond, very polite & courteous. Don’t forget to tip the hard working staff! There are areas throughout the hotel for everyone from beach side, quiet swimming pools to loud music & entertainment. We had a couple of trips out but didn’t use the on-site people for no particular reason. Cozumel was wonderful & very relaxed, not touristy at all once you get on the ferry from Playa del Carmen (which is!). We got the bus from Cancun bus station for peanuts! If you don’t visit Chichen Itsa then you’ve proper missed out as the Mayan culture is a very important part of the culture in the Yucatan Peninsula. Anyway lovely place, room was clean & spacious, cleaned daily, mini-bar stocked on demand & any issues quickly resolved using their app. We love Mexico & the Rui Cancun does it justice!
