Good location, little sleep

We stayed for one night on Jan 3. It was high season, so coming by a hostel was getting to be tough - we had checked 3 or 4 others which were booked up. The facilities at Marpez aren't bad, but I don't think I slept more than an hour. The son who checked us in said that A/C wasn't turned on til 10pm. Since we were catching the 4:30 ADO bus to the airport, we wanted to go to bed early. Unfortunately, the room was sweltering. I'm not sure how my wife managed as I could strip down to just a pair or shorts. A little after 10pm, I went down to see if I could get a remote for the A/C unit as I assumed the owner or son or someone would just be up to click it on about that time. When I went downstairs, the front desk/area was closed and locked up. I knocked and rang the buzzer/bell out front. No answer. After much frustration, I just unscrewed the bulb so we could run the ceiling fan without the light glaring. However, that didn't make sleep much easier as the noise wafted in (cars, TexMex sounding music from down the street, and a barking dog at the property next door who would sound off every 15 min or so). I just couldn't get to sleep. Eventually, I simply closed the window to block the noise and then dozed for maybe an hour. We probably would have been just as well off storing our bags and just wandering around for the night. While the 200 pesos (per person) was cheaper than 1 other place we looked at, it was defnitely not worth the unpleasant night I experienced. I also had talked with other guests who concurred that the A/C was not on (on previous nights). They wanted me to let them know if I learned anything or could get theirs turned on if I tracked down the owners. The one exception was a family who had a 4-room dorm to themselves. They had a standard window A/C unit that they could directly turn on themselves. The wondrous thing about A/C is that it cools the room, allows you to close any windows and keep out noise, and makes a consistent white noise to lull you to sleep. Had the A/C been turned on for us, I wouldn't have had such an annoying experience.

Stayed here for 3 days while in Cancun and really enjoyed my stay. The owners are extremely friendly and helpfull and Miguel is fluent in English. There's a jacuzzi upstairs which is back in operation and two cool chill out balcony's upstairs with a great view and lots of sunlight. good wifi reception in the rooms was a huge plus. Theres alot of clubs and bars in the area and a massive shopping centre right around the corner with awesome pastries and cheap beer. Overall great hostel Would highly recommend!

The place we got directed to which was 'Hostal Marpez' according to the address was a chained shut property with overgrown shubbery all over it. We could get in because it was locked and all the lights were off. after 10 minutes of calling 'Ola!' we eventually were met by the owner who spoke no English. he took us up to the kitchen lounge area and left us waiting in the dark fro 10 minutes before coming straight back up and asking for money. The whole place seemed really creepy and we left asap. Atmosphere was terrible and we weren't convinced anyone else was staying there!
Location and Nothing Else

I didn't really get the "hostel" feeling from this place and I was so hoping to have it as a solo traveller. It's easy to get to from the airport (catch the shuttle to ADO bus terminal) and the area's lively. The breakfast shouldn't even be advertised or the jacuzzi. Breakfast was white bread (hello heart attack), jam and coffee. There's a sign that states only two slices per person. lol If you wanted to use the jacuzzi, it would've taken an hour to turn on and clear all the dust inside of it. The owner seemed miffed because I asked to see the dorm room before giving any cash. The staff didn't seem happy to work there or the owner which was a bummer. Okay if you're NOT a solo traveller and not expecting a hostel vibe. More like a seedy hotel. This review's a little late, but I decided to see if this hostel was listed. I went on to Tulum and had a much better time. FYI...You could feel the springs through the mattress, so bring a sleeping bag.
