Mixed Feelings

Reviewed 17 november, 2021

Friendly bar staff checked us in as the “24 hour reception” was closed. The food in the restaurant was hot, plenty and tasty. The rooms were comfy and pleasant. Can’t comment on breakfast as staff didn’t turn up for it! We booked it for 7:30 (along with other guests) and the chef finally appeared at 7:45 (after I had made a phone call and ended up speaking to someone who wasn’t on the premises who said he would make a call). We had to leave without breakfast as the chef explained that the waiting staff had not shown up they would have to do it all and things “may take longer than normal”. Had to hand our keys to the chef as again, the 24 hour reception desk was closed.

Lovely place.

Had a few days away with my mother, neither of us in our first flush of youth, mom nearly 80yrs. We were given room 22, a lovely, large room with large bathroom, everything we needed, but one needed to be an Olympic athlete or part mountain goat to climb the stairs. I accept it was my own fault as I didn't specify ground or first floor....the Hotel was at full capacity so spent the night in the room. Thankfully the staff were amazing, especially Martin who went the extra mile to get us a room that was much more accessible, he even carried our cases upstairs. Rooms are clean, fresh and daily roomservice. The food is very nice, albeit coffee could be warmer. The staff are exceptional and always pleasant. Would we come again?...yes,in a heartbeat, nothing is too much trouble...great Carvery, good evening meals and virtually anything you want for breakfast. Good value, decent location, central for touring. Loved it !!!! Only downside noise from street at weekend and carpark ing not guaranteed, saying that,we had no problem at all.

Excellent Carvery, professional staff

Reviewed 29 september, 2021

I was able to visit this 350 year old hotel to enjoy a Sunday carvery, last month. As always the staff were excellent and professional during these difficult times. Everything was as always spot on and piping hot. Mountain of meat with lots of trimmings and vegetable options. Desserts to make anyone's mouth water. Would recommend it to anyone! Please make a note that my rating is based on a visit to the restaurant and does not base its ratings on the quality of the rooms.

Looking to stay in a character property.......................

Reviewed 25 september, 2021

Our last stopover in Wales and only a short distance from the A483 Carmarthen seemed to be an obvious choice before returning home to North Shropshire. Looking to stay in a character property I made a reservation for my wife and myself at this former 17th century coaching Inn located in the very heart of the historic town. With rain falling as we drove into Lammas Street late on a Saturday afternoon I was a little concerned that the limited "first come first served" car park would be full. Thankfully, as we emerged through the narrow entrance I was pleased to see that a few spaces remained available. After waiting a few minutes at reception an apologetic gentleman arrived mentioning that it had been a very busy day. Upon completion of the registration formalities we were informed that we had drawn the "lucky straw" and had been upgraded to a family room. Good news indeed! Leading the way (no lift) our guide ascended the stairs and after two flights and being of certain years we began to doubt the wisdom of our acceptance. In actual fact in total it amounted to four flights, by which time fatigue had taken hold. Once inside all such thoughts were swept away for what had been described as a family room was closely akin to a suite. The large room was well furnished with two double beds, an impressive sofa, numerous side tables, spacious wardrobe, dressing table and mirror, tv table, nicely carpeted, good lighting, plus a well stocked hospitality tray. The large bathroom was equally impressive being equipped with a bath tub, separate shower, toilet, washbasin and mirror, and a plentiful supply of quality toiletries. The whole area was very clean with due credit to housekeeping. Having enjoyed a late lunch and with plans for a prompt start on the Sunday morning we chose to take an early dinner in the inviting oak panelled dining room. Once seated and drinks ordered we both opted for the 8oz Rump Steaks. One to be well done and the other medium to rare. To accompany same a bowl of green salad and just one portion of chips. When the sizzlingly hot steaks came to the table they arrived with a complete salad topped with a mayonnaise dressing, whilst the second plate had not just chips but also grilled tomato, mushroom, onion rings and peas. My wife was content enough with her usual well done steak although my own was dry, also well done, without moisture or showing any trace of pinkness. Somewhat disappointed with the lack of attention to detail we retreated to our "family room" for a very comfortable and restful sleep. The next morning arriving for breakfast at 9.00 a.m. we found the restaurant still busy and seemingly only one staff member in attendance. The sideboard with cereals, toast etc was without milk, no yoghourts and somewhat rather poorly presented. Placing our order for cooked items, it included scrambled eggs with bacon and a full Welsh breakfast. Declining mushrooms and baked beans the latter consisted of a sausage, egg, rasher of bacon, hash brown and half a grilled tomato. The meat items I thought somewhat small and quite frugal in appearance, especially when compared against breakfasts taken in other hotels where we had stayed earlier that week. Overall, the visit greatly exceeded our expectations with regard to accommodation. The staff were noticeably coping well under pressure and were at all times polite and helpful. The real let down was the food and the inability of the kitchen to follow straightforward cooking instructions and in the plating up process!

Perfect stay

Lovely breakfast and dinner. Exceptionally clean and well maintained. Friendly welcoming staff and locals. Brilliant hair dryer which was a welcome surprise as usually hotels supply you with a mini travel sized one that has no strong blow to it. Thick black out curtains. We were even given ice to take to our room so we could enjoy a few night caps in bed :) yea we asked but they were more then accommodating...Nothing seemed a big ask. House keeping friendly and kind...opened our windows because it was going to be a hot day...so we returned to a nice cool well aired room. It's those small things that make a huge difference. Very thoughtful. I used to be a GA in a 5* hotel so I know whats what...and this hotel definitely has it right and knows how to take care of their guest! They have they're own car park and that's they only thing I would advise them on is to make it a bit more obvious as it is not obvious when driving to the hotel as it's a side entrance however this lack of signage maybe due to them being literally on the doorstep of the town centre and the carpark would probably be used by others for free parking...but a little note when booking a room giving carpark directions would be a good shout :) thank you for making our stay extra special.
