My husband and I stayed at Fortaleza do Guincho for two nights while we were visiting Lisbon. Overall, it has a great location for a relaxing time and great food options right there. Our stay here was unexpected because a worker's strike at the Lisbon airport stranded us for two days. We knew we didn’t want to stay in Lisbon itself and so we opted for Fortaleza do Guincho as a compromise so we could still stay close to the city. Because I have loyalty status with Relais & Chateaux hotels, this was the closest place to us. I booked it in the airport terminal and then immediately got into a car and headed here. By the time I arrived the staff already had a personalized letter and had upgraded us, and that’s absolutely the kind of service that I appreciate. All the staff was professional and approachable and helpful. We were upgraded to a corner room that looked out onto the water and neighboring peninsula. It was a relaxing respite from the drama at the airport. You truly are staying at a former fort and all the architectural finishes still reflect that. It was almost like going back in time while still maintaining the air of luxury. Our room had a small desk table where the windows opened up and you could lay on a chaise lounge to relax. They have a one Michelin star restaurant here at the property, and so while that is a separate review, the breakfast is also in that space and it is just beautiful. All the food was very good here and the wine selections were perfect. As we did not want to go into Lisbon, we used the bikes to go the 10 or 15 km to Cascais. Going there is easy because you’re going with the wind, but I will say coming back on the bike is tough going directly into the wind. It was still an experience and we were able to enjoy the countryside a lot more than I thought. There’s plenty of hiking opportunities, and of course you don’t need to go all the way to Cascais for a beach because there’s one directly next to the hotel. Actually, there are two! This is a very unique and beautiful place to stay, and we certainly recommend it!

This hotel seems like a fairytale to me! The pictures online do not do this place justice! From the staff to the rooms to the food, everything was beyond expectations! We only stayed for 1 night but wished we had more time in this place, we will definately be back!

Our recent experience here was decidedly mixed. Yes, the location is nice, but isolated. He setting is beautiful. The welcome from the staff was excellent. The breakfast was very good. There were, however, issues. Housekeeping was poor. On our first night, the bed was full of sand. The toilet had issues. There are two restaurants on site. The Michelin one is not open every night, and we did not eat there. The other restaurant, where we did dine, had a very limited menu. We stayed at a couple of 5 star hotels on this trip. this hotel was nowhere near that standard, but they charge like it is. We we disappointed...
Could be better

Lovely historic hotel, exceptional staff, very comfortable room. Rather isolated on a windswept coast. The terrace was unusable due to strong winds. Our issue was that the Ironman competition was scheduled for the day of our departure, blocking the road and forcing our departure to 8 am rather than the noon departure as scheduled. The hotel surely had this information when we made our reservation, but we were not informed until the day before our departure. We could and would have scheduled a day earlier, or could have planned our day differently had they shared this information. We did not enjoy the Michelin starred restaurant. There are many better options for dinner in Cascais.
Such a beautiful hotel & location

We have stayed at the hotel several times but could only come for lunch at ‘The Spot’ this time unfortunately! The view is stunning and even just the tosta mista lunch was a huge portion and side salad was fresh and tasty. We felt it was great value and worth paying slightly more for the service and location. The cake of the day and coffees etc were delicious. We were married here many years ago but the staff still remember us and make us feel so welcome. This was the Relais and Chateaux ‘treatment’ yes to a point, but the staff, particularly Marta and Petra, are just lovely, genuine, welcoming people. When we return to stay we do so for the experience too and we are grateful for their time and efforts. The rest speaks for itself- wonderful clean, unique hotel with top class food & views. Don’t hesitate to visit!
