A passing visit to Catania
A bit of a whirlwind trip around Sicily in a hired car took us to Catania. I had seen Crociferi B and B recommended in a book published in 2014 and with nowhere planned to stay in the city we decided to give Crociferi a punt. Having parked the car, apparently in a bit of a dodgy area, we located the place some good 20 minutes walk away. Our saviour, the host Theresa, did have a room availalable, at a very reasonable price with breakfast included. Theresa was so kind and welcoming and in truth went well beyond the call of duty by insisting upon walking back with me to collect the car in order to bring it back to the security of the B and B's gated compound. Not before Mr Theresa gave me a bottle of water with which to quench my thirst. The room, more like an appartment, was clean and spacious and the bedroom had a decorated, domed ceiling. The breakfasts were just as breathtaking: a selection of cold meats, cheese, home-made cake, almonds that needed to be shelled with the accompanying nutcrackers along with fresh coffee. Theresa was also helpful in putting us in the right direction for restaurants to consider in the evening. It was a thoroughly splendid experience to stay at Cruciferi B and B and I would recomment it wholeheartedly. Also, Via Crociferi is in a reltively quiet part of town with an abundance of little eateries and shops that might catch the eye.
Quiet street close to the centre
Owner was friendly and very helpful. Room was big, with a small living area and reading space. Excellent location, close to all the highlights yet in a quiet and quaint street. We had a wonderful time and felt right at home while staying at Crociferi.
True BnB
I visited during La Festa Sant’Agata. The BnB is very centrally located on one of the most impressive Baroque streets in Europe. Teresa, owner of the BnB, and her husband live on the permises. Your breakfast is served in her large large kitchen. Freshly made pastries, in the Sicilian tradition, are served in addition to local cheesecake and salumeria. Vintage dishes, cups and cutlery. Espresso coffee available including refills. Tastefully decorated rooms. Sicilian and Indian furniture mixed in a whimsical way in rooms and hallways. Also hints of Venice and Nice in the décor as well. My room had a View over a Baroque church. The ceiling in my room had 19th century stucco and hand painted floral décoration.
Hidden gem in old town Catania
We booked this B&B at minute but was utterly surprised by the quality and ambience of this historical building. Landlord must have spent a lot of effort in restoring this place and details could be revealed in each corner of the house. Suggest spend at least 2-3 days to make it worthwhile and explore the bustling neighborhood.
Charming Croceferi
Elegant second story smallish B and B with charming and helpful owners who have been travellers themselves. The rooms are grand with balconies onto a centrally located pedestrianised street. Perfect for short stays.
