Overpriced Clam “fake”
Reviewed 25 July, 2021
Worst dining experience ever. We’ve been going to Chatham Bars for the $55-110 per head clam bake at the beach grill for years and this was truly awful. The buffet contained nothing but boiled potato’s, cold pasta salad and a plate of dry lettuce (sign said heirloom tomato salad but there were none). A too thick chowder gave two of us a stomach ache and a slice of “roast” was full of fat and inedible. One on our party ordered the mahi mahi fish which came grey and rubbery. The desert was nothing special also- watermelon and ice cream (no hot fudge or anything special).
We understand all cape businesses are having trouble staffing so we were patient and tipped our servers well but the quality of the food was fraudulent. We spent over $700 for four adults and two kids and everyone was hungry later. We could have come up with a better meal at a grocery store salad bar.
Beautiful Property, Just Missed the Mark

My wife and I stayed at the Chatham Bars Inn for three nights in early June. Overall, the property is truly beautiful. Our room and a lovely view of the Chatham Bars, and the Adirondack chairs scattered around the resort are ideal for enjoying a glass of wine or reading a book. The Nespresso coffee machine and bathrobes are a nice touch. The bed was very comfortable and at night we enjoyed the peace and quiet.
We arrived about an hour before guaranteed check-in time. Our room wasn't ready yet, so we elected to have a drink at the bar while we waited. The bell service is outstanding at the resort, both the valet and the Lexus vehicles you can request to drive you to and from different parts of Chatham. Our booking included a free upgrade if available. I inquired (I don't think the check-in staff recognized that option), but an upgrade was unavailable.
Every morning we enjoyed breakfast on the patio in the main building. It was buffet only, however you could still order eggs and toast to order. The service at breakfast was consistently good and the buffet was very nice.
We had lunch twice in the Beach House Grill. The service and food there were excellent both times. The menu is a little limited, but we were satisfied with the quality and portions.
Unfortunately, there were some issues with our stay.
On check-in, my wife used the restroom and their was no hand soap in the main lobby. A little alarming after the past 18 months.
As I mentioned, the grounds are beautiful - as a result there are lot of personnel, lawnmowers, and trucks moving around the property most of the day. We came back to the room one day to a staff member talking on their cell phone just outside our window for about 30 minutes. We could hear the whole conversation and kept our blinds shut so that he couldn't see in.
We had drinks at the outside bar adjacent to the main building one evening and decided we'd get some appetizers and move to the Adirondack chairs. The bartender was very insistent we close out our tab since the server we'd have in the chairs would open a new check. We did so, moved to the chairs, were never served, and left.
We ate dinner one night at the Sacred Cod. It was busy, but there was only one or two servers. They were unable to keep up, and the bartender (likely due to stress) was a bit rude to my wife - apparently he was the only bartender working that night covering three restaurants. At least he made sure we knew that. Ultimately, we were unable to get our check so we left and I had the hostess bring our bill to us in the lobby. I think we interacted with our waitress twice in over an hour.
There was a small piece of glass in our room (I think it was in the closet and was pushed out when I dropped a sock in the closet and then put the sock on). Certainly a one in a million event, but the only time I've ever had to pull a piece of glass out of my foot.
The Spa - really the biggest letdown. We had a couples massage that was over $500 and was one of the most underwhelming experiences I've had. The facility is ok (I think in need of an upgrade), but the massages just weren't good. Plus there was a fair amount of noise from other staff members outside our treatment room. I left feeling ripped off.
Ultimately, the resort didn't deliver on what we visited for...a needed relaxing stay. We left with a large bill, and fairly sizable sense of frustration. I spoke with a manager the morning we departed and he was receptive to my feedback. Our room was beautifully decorated and had a lovely view, I actually feel like we got our money's worth for the room. But many (not all) of the resorts amenities ended up frustrating us more that providing us a service.
If you stay at the resort - get a room with a view, enjoy breakfast, beach, pool, and the car service. Avoid the property from 10 - 4. Bring your own bottles of wine and make reservations at some of the local restaurants for dinner.
Not worth it

We recently stayed three nights here and while the overall property was very pretty we were underwhelmed by many elements of the hotel. We were staying in a deluxe cottage room and for the price we paid a night were not impressed, basically you are sharing a cottage with other guests and have very minimal privacy. You could hear people’s conversations in other rooms and their comings and going’s. My husband and I were awoken daily at 7 am by a crying baby and it usually went on for about an hour. When we asked about moving rooms they stated they were fully committed and did not seem to care about our lack of sleep or lack of privacy. This was not how we envisioned our romantic getaway.
The food at the hotel was not up to par. We had dinner one night and the food was mediocre. The buffet breakfast was ok, much of the food was cold and again underwhelming. There is a great place not Associated with the hotel down by the water near the docks where you can grab some amazing, fresh fish and lobster rolls. We loved it so much that we ended up getting food from here twice.
We did enjoy sitting at the beach because you could get some privacy, relax, and unwind. However, so you are aware even in summer the water is freezing and not great for swimming. The hotel pool was a madhouse with kids yelling everywhere, so we skipped that. They should consider building an adults only pool.
Drinks at the Gazebo were nice, the bartenders were attentive and we enjoyed watching the sunset. Also to note that this bar closes at 730/8 and there was no where else to get a drink that we could find.
Overall, I could not believe the price we paid for the room and overall experience. I wish we would have spent the money elsewhere !!!

The service and location are great however, the hotel is very tired and old . The rooms small and in bad need of updating and Stars restaurant is straight out if the 1060's. I would not spend that money to go there again,
Beautiful property/inconsistency in service

This a beautiful historic property set up on a hill with beautiful views out into the Harbor and Atlantic.
We had a lovely room in the Eastwind cabin #280.
There was a fireplace and a separate bedroom with a squeaky bed, but very comfortable mattress. The room has a patio with 2 chairs. The landscaping was beautiful with lots of hydrangeas. The veranda at the front of the hotel was a lovely place for breakfast. There were several bars around the property. The pool was down by the ocean and was nice, but crowded. Lots of little kids at this resort.
We had a cabana one day and it was great with food and drink service.($350).
So why not 5 stars? We experienced numerous customer service errors. From an inexperienced check in clerk who told us we did not have a breakfast package(we did), they did not have our prebooked cabana reservation(they found us one) to complete inconsistency in housekeeping. We got turndown service sometimes with chocolates and water and sometimes with out. We got back from a day at Martha’s Vineyard and our door was wide open. Room service forgot our dessert. We did not have our Virtuoso welcome package.
Now I will cut them some little slack as I know finding staff during COVID has been challenging. However, for $2000 a night including resort fee and taxes the service should be perfect. The restaurant staff every morning asked our names even though they were the same people. We were there 7 days. Same at the bar by our room.
They did give us some champagne and chocolate covered strawberries as well as a minor adjustment to our bill. I would highly recommend this resort if they fix their inconsistencies in service.
My wife loved the tennis clinics and spa.
