Pool bar...Omg! What a joke. 3! people need more than 15 min. to "make" 3 beers, 1 gin tonic (no fancy things, ice, gin, tonic, that's it) and 2 Cinderella's (Crushed ice + limonade) for real!!! Grr, makes me so angry to see such complete incompotence...
Modern Comfort at a Convenient Location

We stayed for 1-night at the Hotel Forte de São Francisco (109 €). Sited as it was in a walled fortress, the hotel was expansive and the grounds huge, sprawling over the top of a hillside overlooking the modern city. There was a distinctly medieval feel driving through the castle gates into the inner courtyard. That feel, while also present in many of the common areas (especially the chapel), extended to the rooms only in the stone blocks (and the width of the walls) around the windows. Otherwise, our room was completely modern, consisting of a sitting area with a couch, narrow desk and window overlooking the courtyard, a connected bedroom with a comfortable king bed, side tables & credenza, and a modern bathroom with a large vanity and a bath/shower. There was a closet in the sitting area with clothes hangers and a in-room safe. Internet access was strong in the room, and available without an access code.
The grounds, which were extensive and impeccably maintained, included a tennis court, a huge and well maintained pool surrounded with loungers and huge palm trees, an aviary and, of course, the stone walls that surrounded the fort. There was a good restaurant at the front gate by the draw-bridge, and the historic centre with its churches, Roman bridge, bars and restaurants was a short walk downhill. Breakfast was adequate.
Overall, I was (unreasonably) disappointed that there was not more of a “castle” feel; however, the Forte delivered comfortable, modern comfort and a great location for the price. Recommended.
Once a great Hotel but no more.

Stopped here on a few occasions but our last visit really will be our last. Still a beautiful hotel in a great spot but sadly now, under staffed and no hotel restaurant for evening meals . Only evening meals available are from a Taverna on site. Food is awful. A couple of us had Veal which was inedible being so tough. The pasta was no better as it was cold. One of our party asked for gammon, egg and chips. Received a pasta dish and that was cold.
Such a shame that this has been allowed to happen but time to find a different hotel.
Think again if you expect to eat as well as sleep! BUYER BEWARE.

We have previously enjoyed good experiences in previous years. However, tonight (18 Sept 2019) we have been treated to a shocking display of arrogance.
The hotel happily took our booking for 8 rooms but suggested that, since the need of the “white rose “ motorcycle group come ahead of our 8 rooms we won’t be allowed to eat!
We were denied access to the restaurant and it was suggested we “wander round Chaves “ to find dinner.
If you wish to avoid similar unplanned unpleasantness ... then don’t stay here.
Other than my observations above, the hotel is good.

It was a cool location for a hotel, a cool location for a pool but not much more. The beds was really hard so we didn’t sleep very well, the staff clearly didn’t know much about the area or just couldn’t be bothered to tell us the right information. Make sure to bring cash or your own towels if you want to go to the pool because they take 10 euro deposit for the towels. The pool is very deep, I’m 185 cm and I couldn’t stand on my toes in half of the pool, if they had a trampoline that would make sense it now it’s just very deep for no reason. Breakfast was quite terrible as well. Overall looks cool and has a cool location but is really really poor.
