NOT GOOD FOR QUARANTINE !!!

Reviewed 16 april, 2022

If you decide to Quarantine there for any financial reason. I could understand. but be prepared. As you can read the Bad review, i also experience them. I had to step out of my room, as for me to come there i had to wait about 1 hour before been able to check in the night before. and i have noone checking on me. I needed to know what to do. didn't know they have a whatsapp # until i find out online. Even after texting no answere either. Was starving with nothing to drink and nothing to eat. When to the breakfast area got myself a pancake and coffee ( by the way, press coffee is with ground coffee not whole coffee bean, just to say). I like the fact that Ocean Spray Apartments propose to tip the staff : but to tip you need extra, extra smile, extra pleasant..... but staff are expecting it. so for people who quarantine make sure you take your own thermometer ( they will charge you 20$ for it), make sure you bring your own food and water for at least few days before you figure out how to order food from the room, Lucky we have wi-fi. Yes, expect cleaning a bit the toilet, the bathroom and the kitchen sink. and if you book your room as you have no choice than quarantine for 4 days. book your room for 4 days, if you need extra extend. because they won't refund you if you leave earlier. Thank you to Myriam. Lucky the Place have her.

HORRIBLE!!!! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Reviewed 28 april, 2021

I chose this place for my 6 days quarantine stay. Upon arrival I received detailed instructions. Some of those were 1) use WhatsApp to communicate and not leave the room (obviously). 2) no one is permitted to enter the room if there is a fault with anything. The restaurant is CLOSED, (as stated by the receptionist) therefore I’ll need to order out. I used the WhatsApp option the same evening and it took 45 mins before someone responded. The delivery guy had to wait in his car and I had to compensate him for that. As the evening came to an end, I noticed the room was still hot yet the air con was properly programmed. I slept through an entire night sweating and tossing. In the morning I had a delivery for breakfast and no one responded to my WhatsApp calls, messages nor straight calls. My boyfriend called several times from abroad and no one responded. The WhatsApp number is the same as the front desk’s number that’s listed online. His only option was to send an email or call the COVID hotline to complain. Several hours later I called again and to my surprise, someone answered. Can you believe the woman told me herself along with the owner has been there all morning and no one called? Lol so basically we fabricated the story. How crazy! I complained about the AC regardless of the rule that no one is permitted to enter the room. She said she will send someone to check on it. About an hour later she called me stating they’ll change the room. I was relieved. The second room lacks common kitchen appliances like a microwave and a coffee maker that the first room had. Only one burner works on the electric stove that consists of two burners. Imagine how long it’ll take me to prepare a meal with only one burner working. If we can only communicate with you via WhatsApp, please have the phone on you at ALL times or have someone at the desk especially knowing the restaurant on the property is closed!! Had I not done a mini grocery shopping the first time, I’d have starved inside the room or wait daily until someone at the desk was pleased enough to pick up the phone. Now, I’ve contacted the front desk 3 times requesting to have an appointment for a COVID test. I was told twice by airport officials that the receptionist at the quarantine accommodation is responsible for making the appointment. I am locked inside a room, no one is taking my calls nor responding to my messages and if I were to visit the front desk in person, they would tag me as “uncooperative“ and perhaps call the cops. Myself along with my boyfriend constantly calls and no one is responding! How can you give specific instructions like these then not play your part as well?? Someone from the ministry of health phoned me to check on me and I shared all of what’s been happening. She said she will phone the front desk and get back to me. The lady from the Ministry phoned me back saying she got through to them and they promised to make the appointment. So basically the front desk takes calls from the Ministry, not from paying guests!! My appointment was made and I am relieved. The following day I was on my balcony with my phone and iPad chilling. I went into the room for a few seconds to grab a bottle of water when I heard a loud splash on the balcony. I went to see what it was and my phone and iPad was covered in water!! The chairs, pillows, everything! Apparently someone was washing the roof at midday without notifying anyone. Now, had I still been sitting on the balcony I’d be covered in dirty water! The person stood there staring at me as though he’s clueless as to what he had done! I called the front desk to complain. The owner walked by ignoring the situation at hand. Thankfully my gadgets are fine thus far. The receptionist called again to apologize. The next day there was a loud noise outside my room that went on for several hours. I ignored it. I couldn’t even respond to a voice note without the sound overpowering my voice. I still ignored it and went on the balcony hoping that it would end soon. Shortly after, the noise followed me. I went back inside the room and saw filthy water all over my room floor!! I immediately sent a message containing photos of the floor to the front desk. A tacky looking man came with a dirty mop and began mopping with these words “we cannot help but to clean the place if it’s dirty!” My door was already open as I was taking pictures for proof. I then asked this man why they need to power wash the place while guests are here? He started being rude and arrogant, as expected. It seems he was the same person that stared at me as though I was the one creating the issue when my gadgets got wet! Strange behavior! Update on the “closed restaurant” : I see the chefs come and go daily, they’d even wave at me. I could see and hear them cooking from my balcony, even walking by with cups and plates. Either the chefs cook for the workers daily or they discriminate against quarantined guests. Just to add, I’ve had 3 negative PCR tests within the past 3 weeks. Had I been positive, I’d have understood their need to not want to cater to me, but stop lying that the restaurant is closed to quarantined guests. Please, do not waste your money.

Barbados- the place to go to… Ocean Spray.. the place to stay at…

Reviewed 8 april, 2021

I had great experience during my stay at the Ocean Spray in Barbados. I was there for a complete 1 month i.e. 4 weeks. I was planning to stay for a week (i.e. just during quarantine) but decided to extend every week… as the days went by. What makes it the best place are a few things… location, people and access to restaurants etc. Barbados generally is regarded as a friendly country… but that necessarily doesn’t need to be true to every hotel/ apartment …That is why my experience has been so good ! During my stay, I met many people who were repeat guests i.e. people who stayed at Ocean Spray before- some 1-2 years back and came back. I have travelled to many countries and stayed in many hotels/ resorts/ apartments and my experience at Ocean Spray tops all of it. Some specifics here: 1- Location –Just like many of us, I was sceptic about the place on what is seen in the photos vs what is real… which many times we do encounter to be different. The location, the room, the scenery all just meets and is beyond expectations. What I saw is what I got… Ocean Spray is located in a quiet place (Southern tip of the island) and overlooks the ocean… My days started with a great vibe… mornings started with me sitting in the balcony sipping in my morning drink…watching sea turtles.. The breeze was so nice, soothing, refreshing and most importantly clean. It is easy to just get down and go for a swim or just sit by the water…morning walks along the coast also makes it a good exercise/ good start of the day…so overall a great location to unwind… and take it easy… 2- Staff/ People- This is another favorite of mine… personally… I like it when I receive a personable service… and people who work there make that possible… It always is a good feeling to make sure your room is taken care of or whatever needs to be done to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible is done. It gives a good home like feeling.. Fabian was the team member who checked me in when I arrived… and he was the one who dropped me back at the airport on my way back to the US. I built a rapport with him during my stay… he helped me, taking me to all my grocery shopping in my second week.. and continued to give me tips about what is good to do and which place to generally go to… He has been in the hospitality industry for some time, and knows Barbados well…What I found interesting with Fabian is.. when I wanted to go for my grocery shopping… he took me to places which had affordable quality products.. (Barbados is very expensive- mind you)… Due to quarantine rules.. I placed an online order before I left USA from Massy’s stores to get me through the week of quarantine. But, when I received my items and the money I paid- it was a quick reality check for me  So, going to grocery shopping with Fabian in my week 2, once I am out of quarantine, did make me feel better about the prices and the items I got… so, over here the matter is not about expensive stores vs inexpensive ones.. it is the matter that Fabian treated me like he was doing the grocery shopping for himself…with that care and thought… This generally continued/ was the case with every request of mine during my entire stay… Other staff like Ryan.. Sade… Maryam.. Shakelia… were friendly and greeted me by my name …not generally the case with other places.. Housekeeping staff were friendly and helpful. I was traveling alone… so it was good to strike a conversation with them every now and then and also get tips about Barbados 3- Access to restaurants/ food/ supermarkets- Ocean Spray is located in Southern part of the island.. As such.. places like Oisitins.. Worthing etc. are easily accessible by shared van / taxi.. They charge BDS $3.50 per ride and getting one is a short walk (near Buffy’s store)… I used to take the van to go to Oisitins..as early as 7 am in the morning to go to my favorite café- Surfers Café- another recommendation from me… The café was in a good location, food was great and staff were very friendly… you can’t go wrong with that place… their seasoned fries were the best I had in a long time…If you want more variety in food options… go further (in the same van No. 11) and you will go to Worthing/ St. Lawrence gap… places like Café Sol.. are another great place to eat great food and enjoy the scenery. Supermarkets like Massy’s are in Oistins.. which offer most of the food available in a regular Western style supermarkets.. just that it is expensive…vegetables at the vegetable vendors by the road (again another recommendation by Fabian).. are fresh, cheaper… and good.. Supermarkets like Popular are better priced.. and most of the fast food places do deliver food.. (depends on the curfew hours etc.). 4- Room – room at the Ocean Spray itself was good… airy and spacious.. the first 5 days I spent in quarantine went by like the cool breeze that I used to get in the morning.. I stayed in a studio.. and it had all the necessary equipment… and furniture.. I did not turn on my TV… as I had books to read / be on my laptop.. Wi-Fi was decent but sometimes spotty. I am used to communicating with front staff via phones in the room… Ocean Spray does not have a phone in the room – which was the only thing that I could observe as being odd… but if you email your request to the front desk.. your request is generally taken care of soon enough… Few things worth noting / need attention: 1- There are no phones in room. This can be a hassle esp. if you are in quarantine where you are not allowed to step out of your room. So, best to get the reception’s whatsapp number or email. Team members manning the reception are prompt in responding to either of it. It took me a day or so to get the hang of this, as I struggled for the first day without contact. 2- If you are going to be in quarantine, then food can be an issue until you are in quarantine. This is anywhere – not just at Ocean Spray. So, be prepared. Either you can ask for help when checking in or order some basics through Massy’s online. 3- Barbados relies heavily on cash. The nearest ATM is in Oistins (from Ocean Spray). I took some money out at the ATM at the Airport before I got into my taxi. 4- Wi-fi- can be spotty sometimes, but if it is the case, then best to go near a balcony for few seconds and the reception is back in form again. Note to the owners- Wi-fi needs some boosting. Some preparation like this esp. food, can help you. Just don’t expect or compare Ocean Spray to a 5 star hotel. This is a place worth staying for it’s location, friendly service/ staff and overall a peaceful place. Enjoy !

Nightmare in Paradise - You Cannot Afford to Book This As A Cheap Option

Reviewed 24 january, 2021

Close your eyes and picture the perfect Barbados trip (sandy beaches, turquoise water, delicious food, friendly locals, world-class hospitality) and then picture the exact opposite, concentrated in one apartment-hotel complex - this is Ocean Spray. This booking was made because Ocean Spray was an approved quarantine hotel, which implies that the government who approved it can vouch for their cleanliness/health and safety. Upon arrival, the loose guidelines and federal oversight was on full display as a nightmare began to take shape that would literally haunt our dreams for ten nights. It is worth noting here that much of Barbados relies on WhatsApp (ordering food, taxis, even communicating with the front desk manager at this hotel). For our 10-day stay, we had zero WiFi in our room the entire time which meant we could not communicate to the front desk (there are no phones in the room other than your mobile), the government (for Covid results etc) unless we dangled off the balcony trying to get wifi for a few seconds. This was not an issue with one room as we were put into multiple rooms and we took photos of dozens of other quarantine guests dangling off their balconies, desperate to order a survival food delivery or talk to loved ones. More on this to follow. Speaking of balconies, I was grateful to receive beer caps and cigarette butts from the last prisoner/guest to remind me of the diligence the cleaning staff exerted before I arrived. The first room we were put in was nothing like the room we booked from the website. The mattress was so sunken in the middle that if you placed a bottle of water on one side, it couldn't resist the gravitational pull into the center gully. The pillows were paper thin. Worse yet, there was blood on the comforter and orange grease stains (or very old blood) on every single part of the linens (pillow cases - check, sheets - check, towels - check). Atleast they smelled fresh, right? Wrong - apparently bugs loved the fresh smell because there were bugs crawling inside the sheets as well. I awoke after the first night with a cacophony of bites across my foot and lower leg and managed to snap some photos of the bugs in the sheets for management. Thankfully, a hot shower after a long trip can melt away the stress, right? Wrong again - zero hot water. On day one, day ten and I expect today, there wasn't hot water from the shower, the bathroom sink or the kitchenette. Not even slightly warm water. The towels were thread-bare, but not just as an expression. They were literally remnants of a towel that consisted of a few threads, desperately clinging to each other to preserve their status as a TOWEL and not a bunch of strings in a knot. Coupled with that, there was dustballs and hair all over the washroom and stain up and down the external toilet bowl which were easily wiped away with toiler paper. So much for health and safety. After shouting down to management, we were given a new room which had all of the same challenges as above, stunk like someone had been smoking in it with the doors shut all week and the WiFi signal worked if you pushed your bed into the corner of the room, stood on it and held your phone up to the ceiling. You can imagine how well this works for a business traveler with +5hrs/day of Zoom calls. "No, I'm fine Cheryl. It must be your Wifi!" The bathroom in this unit had roaches on the walls and ceiling but at this point, the surprise was wasted as our spirit as business travellers was broken and we were mere prisoners to this space. In a perfect world, this would all be forgotten after speaking to management but at Ocean Spray, when they have you as a Covid19 quarantine guest, you cannot leave your room at any point and can barely communicate to the outside world for help. Despite relaying photos to the Chief of Medical who called the conditions 'atrocious' and promised to send someone to check in on us, the 10-days we waited for our results had zero check-ins from the gov or aid offered. Not one call or text to ask for our temperature, nobody from the front desk checked in and only once in 10-days that someone came to drop fresh towels and sheets. Could this trip get any worse? Yes. Finally, after losing a string of calls with prospective business partners due to the lack of connectivity, we demanded a taxi to be moved to new Approved Lodging on the other side of the island. The entire world was aglow with possibility and promise as the units were clean, WiFi was booming and hotel staff spoke to you like a welcomed guest. Upon advising Ocean Spray that we were leaving because they had just cost us 10-days of business with their failure to provide basic amenities (connectivity, access to food and drinking water, clean bedding etc) , they immediately ran up charges on our card. But wait - didn't the government just run a national TV broadcast stating that hoteliers should seek this reimbursement from them directly? Not to fear, as they'd rather transfer that stress to a foreign visitor to communicate with the government. At the new lodging, we met other guests who had shorter stays at Ocean Spray but all the same stories - bugs in the bed and around the unit, blood splatters on walls and sheets (mosquito explosions, hopefully), ZERO WIFI access for the week and guests who had also gone a few days pecking at leftovers with no connectivity to order meals or fresh water. Objectively speaking, all of the potential for a location like Ocean Spray has been wasted by the quality of amenities and service delivered. It could be an idyllic, eco paradise on the South Coast but instead was filled with angry, starving and outraged guests who were overpromised and under-delivered. Maybe it was the surge of quarantine guests that boosted their attendance but most of these issues are minimum viable amenities to get right. We've traveled all over the world, from Mexico surf towns to the Maldives and we know an eco lodge from a Four Seasons so we tether our expectations to match. Normally, we'd give independent business owners the benefit of the doubt and skip the review (unless its a positive one, which we also write in great detail on one of our travel blogs), but in this case - people need to know how awful the experience was. The minute we left Ocean Spray, the sun burst from behind the clouds and Barbados' warm reputation wrapped us tightly in its arms, whispering in our ears, "Come with me, child, tomorrow is a new day."
