Worst accommodation I have ever stayed in - DO NOT GO UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

Reviewed 27 august, 2020

Worst holiday accommodation EVER. Under no circumstances, do NOT book to stay in the Domspatz City Apartment via Dom Hotel Am Romerbrunnn on We arrived at 8pm and couldn't get into the hotel to check-in, it had closed. Rang to be told to access our key from a keysafe - not what our check-in instructions had said. We were then given rubbish verbal directions to the apartment. It is not in an apartment block, even though there is one called Domspatz City apartments. You enter through the back of a kebab shop, past the kitchen and store room, up 4 flights of tiny stairs with no lift (great with suitcases for a family of 5 for a fortnight's holiday), to what can only be described as a bedsit. The shower is in the hall behind a curtain. The "lounge" contains 4 chairs and 4 single beds - not suitable for families at all. There were no glasses or bowls in the kitchen. The ridiculously loud noise (shouting) from the kebab and pizza shops below, plus the music from bars close by, plus drunk homeless people gathering on the street corner and arguing carried on until 4.30am. There were 2 adults and 3 kids. We had been travelling since 4am that morning and needed to sleep. What is worse, is that the cathedral (100m away) started ringing the bells at 7.30am the next day.... for hours. Even if you had gone with friends and stayed up drinking, you wouldn't want to be woken up to that. We literally couldn't stay so checked out THREE DAYS EARLY. We lost all our money (600 euro), that is how bad it was. NEVER, EVER STAY HERE. When we checked out they offered to swap us into a different apartment, but there was no way we could stay. It was awful. I don't have a photo, but if you look it up on Google streetview, the entrance is via the Istanbul kebab shop and the apartment is the top floor windows (4th floor) above the kebab shop... NOT the apartment block next door. (Which would have been equally as noisy to be honest. Drunk, homeless people gather to drink on the street corner).

Very Central Location with some unusual details and a great price

Reviewed 8 december, 2019

The hotel is located within walking distance of the central station. The entrance is somewhat hard to find. A very small door in a cornerbased hallway. There is no such as a reception and service staff is only available mornings and afternoon. The door is locked and has (for Germany) a sort of sophisticated self checkin system. If you book online, like I did, the system requires your credit card and personal details in order to unlock and open the doors. The process is not very well explained and it may take various attempts until it finally opens the pearly gates. It provides you with some codes, which then again are somewhat confusting, with which the room door opens. The building is of older age and has no elevator and therefor also not suited for guests with disabilities. I had to walk up to the 3rd floor. No assistance for heavy luggage was available at around 09:00pm Rooms are modern and great for the price. 2 Bottles of water and a coffee/tea set are available free of charge. Cable TV and internet works great. Tonns of restaurants and nightlife are located within the immediate neigborhood. Breakfast can be taken at a sister hotel somewhere in the neigborhood. I have not been there, so no comment here. Down the line, if you are looking for a price concious hotel in a very central location, have no disabilities and don't mind climibing stairs, this place is a very good solution.

2p stay in Domspatz Boardinghouse

Reviewed 25 october, 2019

Low price, basic quality, perfect location. Price/quality is very good. Check-in terminal is automatic in DE and EN, no other languages. Bed sleeps fine. Priv. bathroom and free amenities. Can't complain.

Reviewed 30 january, 2019

I have never seen such a horrible customer service than at Domspatz Hotel I Boardinghouse before. After making sure that their so called self-check in terminal works around a clock by calling them prior to our stay, we weren't able to check in at 3:30 am. No one could help us, their emergency call told us to just go to another hotel and check-in there. The best part was that we never got back the money for the room we paid for in advance neither for the taxi costs. We heard nothing from them. So thanks to their comfortably NOT around the clock working innovative check-in kiosk we had to find a room at 3:30 in the morning somewhere in Cologne. Never would go there again!

Convenience over comfort

Reviewed 18 august, 2018

Needed a room for a night near the main station to catch the early train back to the UK. This is five minutes from the station - tick. I got into Cologne on the night sleeper from Vienna at around 08:30 so not being able to check-in til 15:00 wasn't as convenient. Anyway, I made my way to their sister hotel further away that gave me breakfast and looked after my luggage until later. I couldn't fault the staff here. The automated check-in took some getting used to but it all worked. The printed receipt shows the code for front door and your room so don't lose it. My room was on the first floor and spacious and clean. Everything offered is provided; tea & coffee, bottled water and WiFi. The details of the latter are on the back of the door with the emergency procedures. The room decor reminded me of bedrooms for teenagers in the 80s so a little nostalgic for me and my years but not everyone's taste. Things that stopped a higher rating; not air conditioned but not advertised as such but nothing I did with the thermostat seemed to make a difference on a hot night. Overall the bathroom was clean and all the disposable items wrapped but the drainage in the shower meant that quickly the tray filled with dirty soapy water that wasn't pleasant.
