Quirky place - could be amazing in the right hands.
We have very mixed views on Beck Hall, the place is based in beautiful surroundings, and the community are incredibly friendly. The place itself has a quirky charm and could be a fantastic place in the right hands. However, it is regrettable to say that our experience was not good at all, for one key reason and many small ones. The main reason; – we booked two rooms, but ended up only been able to use one room. This was because the bed in one of the rooms fell apart when we sat on it. It was apparent when you looked at the bed, it was not designed to be a hotel bed, and even by domestic standards it was questionable. Also when we arrived we were informed there was no heating or hot water but they were working on it. The rooms were absolutely freezing, we had to ask for heaters and were unable to shower. This was resolved after a few hours but added to the frosty welcome! Luckily, we had a second room booked, which had one double bed and a small single bed, which we ended up using as the hotel was very unhelpful in sorting out another room for us. In fact, they didn’t even offer. To rub salt into an already very open wound, they tried to charge 50% of the original price because the room had been used and needed to cover the cleaning cost. Only after a discussion did they agree to reduce the charge to 25%, which you will understand was still too much. The cleaning didn't extend to light fittings, which were full of dead flies. Small issues - Car park access, lighting and state – the car park was very dark, full of potholes and puddles and access to the hotel was poorly signed. Access to the hotel, the path up to the little footbridge is rough and not easy to walk on, especially in the dark. Food – the food did not meet the expectations set out on their website. We were expecting freshly prepared food and got something that looked and tasted as if it had been pre-prepared and reheated. Rooms – we booked premium rooms but again based on the website's description, we don’t believe they met our expectations. The rooms decor poorly match the size of the room, and they felt uncomfortable. The rooms only serve as a place to sleep not a place to enjoy time away. Service – poor and unprofessional, to be exact the junior staff while not well trained were warm and welcoming; the real problem was the senior staff. We found they were more concerned with following their rules and policies than making their customers welcomed and valued. Overall we could not recommend Beck Hall and will not be returning.
slow and dishonest
It was a disappointing first visit after reading raving reviews. I would not recommend it because 1. the service was slow for us a family of four with hungry children. Unless you have endless patience and full tummies to wait, it is not for you. 2. multiple miscommunications between staff and customers, cannot get simple things like straws without trying to get attention from all staff, then the message got lost between staff and the efforts outweighed the actual straws. 3. the food was average, not good value for money. 4. I was charged an extra £1.95 for the sauce of the already pricy steak (see receipt). It should be stated clearly beforehand or be included in a full price.
Absolutely lovely stay
After the usual warm Yorkshire welcome, we unpacked and settled down in the snug by the roaring fire to escape the torrential rain. Only had an overnight stay but it was really lovely and we will be back as soon as we can. It’s a dog friendly hotel but there’s no doggie smell anywhere nor any sign of wear and tear caused by them. The setting is very picturesque and the restaurant is situated right along side the river with fab views. All in all a little gem in a gorgeous village.
Rainy but who cared
What a lovely spot. You have to walk over a little stone bridge to get to the hotel and it was a lovely introduction. Room was lovely, food was great & the service friendly and helpful. Yea it rained but lovely anyhow. I’m sure when we go back it will be five star - at the moment it’s just all those little COVID type things that stop you seeing places at their best best x
Birthday Lunch
Beck Hall was our go to place for lunch when as a child was dragged for walks to Malham Tarn and Malham Cove. As it was my mums birthday I thought we'd take a trip down memory lane and book lunch. There is a new modern dining room now. Very spacious views out to the stream. On arrival we were seated and a birthday card given to my mum which I thought was really lovely of them. We ordered steak baguettes which were really tasty. My husband had a selection of tapas which he really enjoyed and my young daughter who thought there was nothing she'd like polished off a roast dinner. Pudding of parkin ordered they brought my mums with a sparkler which again was a lovely thing to do. Again my daughter who bemoaned there was nothing she would like proceeded to eat all my husbands. We had a very enjoyable afternoon. All covid protocol followed and felt very safe. The staff are excellent very friendly and accommodating. Thank you so much we look forward to visiting again.
