Room 66
Delightful place to stay in Normandy , very comfortable room , good restaurant, French village atmosphere , D-Day Beaches and Museums about 15mins away, friendly staff, not much more we could want on visit to this historic area ; hope to enjoy this establishment again in the future.
I'm in love!
You should know, I am VERY picky and i still say this place is a DREAM. Honestly, this is in my top 5 hotels ever. Not to be dramatic, but this is the complete package. Although some of the roads leading to Crepon are tiny, the destination is worth the trip. I'm sure there are more convenient locations for visiting the D-Day locations, but this is the warmest and most inviting. We arrived a bit late in the afternoon and were promptly greeted and escorted to our 3rd floor room. The stairs are a hike, take your time. Also, they will help with luggage, just ask. =) .( **NOTE - if you need a first or second floor room due to mobility concerns, contact the property when you make your reservation. They are VERY accommodating, but if they are full there is little they can do upon arrival. The owner asked me to include this in my review because she would like to accommodate everyone) Our room was very large with essentially a king bed and a twin in the corner. the bathroom is lovely, as is the furniture. It was very comfortable and very clean. The three nights we stayed there were the best sleeps of the trip! The restaurant... so good. they will ask you at breakfast if you intend to eat in the dining room that night, and you should. The menu is multi-coursed, but you could order a la carte. Its a bit pricey but well worth it. Apparently some folks stay there with half board, so dinner was included. We did not opt for that. the Filet was delicious but the deconstructed veg pot pie was just ok. Service is efficient and curt, but not rude. We seemed to be under the impression that they sat us in an area with other non-fluent French speakers. That's fine, but the English speaking server seemed overwhelmed. Also, by the 3rd night, the staff had warmed to us and were more tolerant of our efforts to speak French. We did try. Breakfast was exactly right and located in a cozy room near the main dining room. I think they accommodate large tour bus crowds, but I never really saw them, only the buses, which was nice. I highly recommend the salon/bar area with its fantastic fireplace. if it is unmanned, simply call from the available phone and they send someone over. We enjoyed a calvados by the fire after dinner and a beer before. The overall ambiance and hospitality of this property is top notch. They even offered to mail our postcards for us! Also, paring is easy and safe and the grounds are stunning. I want to return to this hotel.
A quiet manor in the coutryside
We had a room in the offsite portion of the manor. At first we were taken aback by not being able to stay in the main hotel but quickly fell in love it. We actually loved walking to and back from the main hotel for dinner. It is only about a half kilometer. The room was spacious, quiet and very nicely decorated. The breakfast room at this site was quite nice. All of the staff was wonderful and most spoke at least some English. The restaurant in the main part of the hotel was great. Very good food, great atmosphere. It was conveniently located close enough to Bayeux for our D-Day tour but still far enough away from everything so that we could enjoy the countryside.
Superb Countryside Logis
My wife and I stayed one night in a Junior Suite (Room #1) on a demi-pension basis. We were shown to our room by Jean-Luc, who explained the facilities in a friendly and courteous manner (and in excellent english). The ground-floor room can be best described as baronial in style and was well-appointed, with a private patio to the rear. Tea-making facilities were included but the kettle had only a 30cm lead which made boiling water an interesting evolution. The bathroom was a little odd in that the window faced out onto the inner courtyard, with only a thin voile curtain giving any form of privacy. It made you think twice about taking a shower with the light on! We had a couple of drinks sitting on the terrace outside the bar watching the comings-and-goings of the guests before going into the restaurant for our evening meal. We both selected the set-price "Menu Terroir" at 32€ (included in the demi-pension price, but you can upgrade to the "Menu Tradition" (44€), or go a la carte and the bill will be adjusted accordingly) - please see the hotel website for composition of the current menus. By the time the entree arrived there was a buzz of polite conversation in the dining room that enhanced the ambience of the evening. The meal was excellent and made an fantastic start to our annual holiday. The breakfast buffet the following morning (again, included in the demi-pension price) was varied and plentiful, setting us up for the day ahead. The total cost was 325€, which included demi-pension, tourist tax and drinks. Very highly recommended.
A rose by any name -- excellent base for exploring D-Day area
So, they're changing their name on Tripadvisor to include both properties... We were welcomed warmly and shown to our room. Good wifi and CNN. They do a nice job with their food, offering a number of choices on their demi-pension menu. Service was very good. We walked thru the village church and graveyard this year — also walked on the other side of the main road, where we found Mathan and the pleasant road/walkway between there and Rançonniere. The little boucherie on a corner of the main drag, near the village center had good millefeuille printemps and cidre — and several sandwich choices -- and a friendly and charming owner. We will continue to return and highly recommend Rançonniere to others.
