The accommodations are cozy and stepping into the hotel is like taking a step back in time. The decor and floor plan capture the essence of its origination in 1907. The Bistro is delish. The menu is minimal in options but abundantly decadent in freshness and delicious local flavors. Above all, the staff is welcoming, helpful and genuinely joyful. They greet guests with a warm smile and respect. The Balch Hotel feels like home.

I have been visiting the Balch Hotel since 2018. Since discovering it the staff and aesthetic has made it my number one choice for slowing down and recharging my soul. Whether I spend a few nights without leaving Dufur or use it as a base camp to explore the region it never fails to satisfy. I highly recommend this place for anyone who needs a break from their day to day. Enjoy it and tell the staff John sent you.

This hotel has all the charm of an historic building. We were on the 3rd floor, and although there is no elevator, the stairs were not too difficult to ascend. The slate balcony was a great spot from which to drink my morning coffee and view the splendor of Mt Hood. The parlor has comfortable seating, curios to examine, books to browse and games to play. The small cadre of staff catered to our every need, and went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of. Breakfast, which is included with room booking, was a simple affair, but nutritious and filling - much better than the continental breakfast served at most chain hotels. A hard boiled egg, yoghurt, granola, a home-made muffin, and sliced apples started our days out on the right note. Although the restaurant menu was very limited, due to the quiet time of year, dinner was delicious, with a home-made flair. We would definitely like to visit again soon!

We stayed in room 1, which on a clear day would have had a view of Mt Hood. This time, however, we enjoyed red maple trees from both windows. A shared bath was just down the hall, very convenient. I treated myself to a warm berry cobbler as there is no dinner on Tuesday nights. Their breakfast basket was delicious! Josiah and Claire are wonderful hosts. This was not our first stay at the Balch Hotel, and it won't be our last.

Great old historic hotel

We loved the Balch hotel. It is perfect with simple old rooms and antiques throughout. The downstairs common areas are comfortable, beautifully decorated, and include a small library. The restaurant is excellent--delicious! The grounds are delightful. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It is NOT a modern hotel: bathroom down the hall, no closet, no TV, no elevator, old windows that are hard to open and only have screens if you ask the management for them. It is located on the edge of an old town near farm fields. If you want character and history, this is the place. The town has few services (a tavern, a small cafe, and a gas station), but we loved the open air museum with old farm equipment. We took drives to White River Falls & Mt. Hood National Forest.
