Wonderful Christmas Break

Reviewed 12 january, 2022

We spent Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day morning At Lumley Castle and were thoroughly spoilt by the management and staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The Elizabethan Banquet on Xmas eve was absolutely brilliant with great entertainment throughout. Again all those involved in entertaining and looking after us were amazing and so very friendly. All in all around 3 hours of food, drink and laughs. Xmas day, again just a wonderful, relaxing day of being fed and drinking lots and sleeping. We had opted for one of the rooms in the castle and were so glad we did. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean. Perfect for crashing out for a nap after Xmas dinner! The food was stunning throughout our stay, The staff, who were giving up their own Xmas' to look after us, were cheerful and accomodating and the venue itself was/is absolutely stunning. A massive thanks to Gordon and his entire team for making it such a special Xmas. We'd go back again to Lumley Castle without a second thought.

Fabulous festive visit

Reviewed 3 january, 2022

We stayed one night with a trip to Beamish museum and lunch at Italian restaurant Il Cancello (both were excellent) The hotel is fabulous- lots of history, spiral staircase, flagstone floors, interesting books and crannies and it’s own ghost. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We stayed in the castle rather than the courtyard rooms and they were wonderful and felt good value for what we paid. We had rooms next door to each other - the kids had a bright and well decorated twin room with a “hidden” bathroom. They said the shower was awful - hard to operate and either boiling or freezing but I don’t know if they just didn’t manage to crack it. Our room had a lovely bed with canopy and a lovely green bathroom (and a shower that worked just fine). It was dimly lit which was evocative but it was really just too dark - I had to keep dragging my bag over to the bed to find things in it! The bathroom hadn’t been properly cleaned and I can only the former resident didn’t have great toilet aim so it was a bit smelly. The fittings need a good polish with some brasso or replacing as taps and door handles were very dull. They had also placed the only hook so that if you hung a towel off it, it covered the toilet roll. Odd choice. We were given a welcome letter with most of the information you’d need, and it says that you need to login to use the internet but doesn’t give the WiFi password! I had to call reception for it. I feel like they could save themselves a question for almost every guest by putting it in there. The room was very comfortable, but the lights were connected in a very odd way - the switches had to clicked on and off in a very specific sequence to turn the lights in the room off. Next morning when I turned on the switch by my side of the bed, it turned on the lights on the other side! We had dinner and breakfast in the black knight restaurant. Dinner was excellent and I thought £24 for two courses or £30 for three for the quality of food (and good portion sizes) was good value. Service was excellent too. Breakfast was a little bit more haphazard- we had breakfast At 9.30 and there was a limited choice of pastries. I’ve noticed this in other hotels - why buy equal quantities of the more and less popular ones? Why not give your guests what they want? I don’t think I’ve ever done this before, but I sent my French toast back as it was burnt (completely black on one side) but they were very good at bringing an alternative quickly. The food was otherwise good. Check out was very easy - they slip the bill under your door and if you agree then just drop your keys. Would definitely come back.

A mixed bag - nice food, poor service

We visited here for festive afternoon tea and Christmas markets, or rather we were booked for this. In reality we noticed that the dates of the market had changed on social media which meant that I spent approximately 40 minutes trying to get through to someone on the phone to check on this a few days before our booking. I was unable to speak to anyone, which I found shocking for a high class hotel and tourist attraction. I then messaged through the website and received a reply saying that due to covid cancellations the Christmas market had been cancelled. Bearing in mind that this was 2 days before the due date of the booking it's clear that the didn't intend to contact the relevant customers themselves. I was given a very small symbolic refund per booking for the market and my comments about the poor communication were ignored in subsequent replies from their admin staff. On the day we struggled to even find where we needed to be inside the castle due to very little signage and no staff around to help with directions. The food itself was nice but when I asked for some water at a table of 4 people I was given a single small glass as if the supply was rationed. When another person from our party asked for some more tea they were brought back the same teabag with fresh hot water in it and had to specifically ask (after trying to let it brew for several minutes) for a new teabag. Again, I found this very surprising for the standard of restaurant. Overall the staff that we spoke to in person at the venue on the day were warm, friendly and professional but the overall customer service and poor communication has put me off making any further bookings.

Simply splendid

It's a shame i could only give 5 stars as it was easily worth more. We arrived early and enjoyed drinks in the castle library bar in front of a roaring fire. We then went to the dungeons for the escape room which was brilliantly done and amazing Afternoon tea followed which was huge with different festive sandwiches, scones and cakes-all homemade Room was fantastic, castle stateroom with narnia wardrobe (room 49) or Sir Ralph to give its correct title. We then went to the murder mystery event followed by disco. Couldn't fault any of it and a fab time by all Just for anyone concerned as we were the staff take covid very seriously with constant cleaning in what must be trying times for them with rising numbers, staff absences but you wouldn't know it Too many people to call out any individuals but fantastic team, very friendly and cant do enough for you. We'd like to do the medieval dinner so hopefully we'll be back before too long Thanks again for a wonderful stay
