Non helpful staff, misleading information, privacy disturbance and dirty
we stayed 3 nights in room 5. when we booked it was advertised as small double private bathroom. the bathroom wasn't en-suit and nowhere was mentioned that it isn't. upon arrival we have been notified that is down the hall passing 2 other rooms...i have asked for an other room and they had a family room non booked an available but she wanted to charge us 40 pounds extra a night! what a joke. we put this aside it was too late to book an other place so we decided to stay. on second day despite the do not disturb sign they wanted to come in the room early in the morning. we have asked them why and didn't give us a proper reason (bare in mind i was naked after a shower and had to have this awkward convo through the closed door, terrified that they would just come in as the person was very aggressively demanding to come in... the place was dirty and mouldy. the wallpaper falling and pumped up from probably a leak. absolutely disgusting place and rude staff. we'll never stay again and don't recommend.
reception
I want to start by saying the young man in the reception was so helpful to me. How should I start this... he saved me from being lost in Edinburgh. I am from California I was booked at a hotel near fountain park and the taxi driver dropped me off a different balmour hotel and so I decided to ask for help as my last resort and the young man let me in from the rain after I explained what had happened and so he 1. Rang up my hotel (balmour) and asked about me to check in and the whoever was on the phone did not seem to care that much, as he was demanding that if I want to check in it will cost me 20 GBP!!! 2. He called the taxi that I had no number for. Honestly if it wasn’t for his kind gesture I don’t know what I would do, so a big thank you!
Worst experience
We checked in to this Guest house after touring London, Lake District and final destination being Edinburgh. The room No 6 which we were allocated had a sloping roof ceiling which was a great hindrance for movement in our room . We banged our heads a couple of times. The bathroom cubicle was so small and cramped that we had to come out of the cubicle to soap ourselves. On the day of checkout we had our Edinburgh Guided tour at 9 am and had to reach Edinburgh airport in the afternoon so we requested the owner to allow us to keep our luggage till we came back from the tour.Since we were in a hurry to go for the tour in the morning, we had planned to give the 5 GBP per bag as demanded by the owner while collecting the luggage. However the minute we entered the hotel in the afternoon by 1.30 pm , the rude owner started screaming at us saying we had caused a problem to her by not paying the 5 GBP in the morning itself. We have travelled to so many countries and also had just travelled across London & Lake district. But no where did we encounter such rude behaviour and also amount being charged just to deposit our bags for a few hours . This has left bad memories in our otherwise memorable tour of UK
Clean and cosy
Decor of this guest house is rather strange, way too many patterns and nothing really matches but if you don't have design OCD then you will be really happy here. The beds are clean and comfortable and staff efficient and polite. The guest house is really situated to explore Edinburgh, 20 minutes to the town centre. There are a good selection of shops and bar within only a 2 minute walk. Parking is free on the street but the area is busy so you may not get to park right outside. Everything considered, its a great base and I would definitely recommend if your coming to Edinburgh.
Good location and rooms but lousy check-out staff
Hotel location is pretty good and walkable to city center (20mins). Many food and grocery options nearby. Room was cozy and comfortable with sufficient essentials. Parking is free along the road. Check-in was swift and the friendly elderly lady told us check-out was at 10am. We told her we will check out at 6-6.30am and asked if the reception would be opened. She said reception will be closed and to leave the room door unlocked with the keys in the keyhole in the door inside the room. Confirmed with her twice and she said to do so. Upon check-our at 6am, we did as instructed. When we arrived the ground floor, a young lady came out of reception and asked for the keys. We told her it was in the room. And she started lecturing us on how a reception works. Informed her that we were instructed by the other lady to do so but out of kindness, my partner went back up to the 2nd floor to retrieve the keys for her. However, when she found out the room was not locked, she became nasty about how a guest house works. When we were walking out the door, she started grumbling in her language and threw a small fit. Totally unprofessional and rude.
