Mini get away
I will start with the telephone conversation I had with Simone. Very friendly yet professional I felt at home the instance we spoke. The place is intriguing and intricately designed. The food was prepared in a timely manner. My only regret was leaving too soon. Lovely staff professionalism at it's best.
Diamond of the First Water
It started with Simone calling just as I drove in to ask us what we needed for dinner. It may have been a coincidence or it may have just been impeccable timing, either way, as we checked in, we were handed some lemongrass-ginger gold perfection for welcome drinks and in minutes the paperwork was done. I had a vegetarian pizza for dinner that was just, amaze-balls and it was served outside of our cabin/hut/palace- it depends how you look at it. It was all three for me. Now for the cabin! We stayed at Africa Sunrise, a two-story circular hut that opened to give a near 360 view of the most spectacular azure waters of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Portland. We had all the amenities of any standard hotel room, just stripped down, rustic and authentic. The shower was clean. Towels fresh. Place nice. Place smell good. The bamboo bed was thick and high, with clean sheets underneath an African print duvet and mosquito netting hovering above. The infinity pool was steps away and tucked to the side was an outdoor shower. A few steps took us down to a pristine beach perfect for doing absolutely nothing. But if you wanted to meditate, do yoga or swing lazily in a hammock, that could easily happen too. The long and short of this review is that, if you are looking for a rustic experience, a chance to reconnect with nature, this is the place. I am already planning my next visit - you should too!!
This place is majestic!
What an experience! The huts are so beautiful. Each is unique and has an incredible amount of attention to detail. It's not just a resort, but truly an experience. We extended out stay TWICE. That is how amazing this place is. We stayed in two different huts, African Sunrise and Sea Grape. Both were ocean front on the cliff with breath taking sun rises (the sunrise in AS is unreal, but SG has by far the best chair ever (it is on the cliff)) and a huge outdoor shower. Make sure if you go to the GH beach, walk to the cliff side, stay to the left and enjoy the splash chair (there's two chairs on the cliffs and they are SO MUCH FUN). Beware: Jamaica has a lot of mosquitoes... if you're like me, buy the GH all natural bug spray and make sure you get a room with a fan. Oddly, the spray is also good for itch relief. I bought an extra one to take home. Lol. The food is also awesome (fresh juices for breakfast!). The staff here is like family and they go above and beyond to make sure you're experience is lovely. There's also yoga, dancing, and other awesome activities. Seriously, if you love the idea of staying in this kind of hut (you must love the outdoors) you won't regret it - I actually wouldn't be surprised if you extend your stay too. :)
An oasis for relaxation, rejuvenation and restoration.
This location is a perfect oasis for relaxation, rejuvenation and restoration. It's ideal for families, couples, solo, large groups, really it is a place for everyone. Nature is repurposed both ornamentally and therapeutically at Great Huts. So if you are looking for a visceral connection with nature, the African House at Great Huts should be on your bucket list. Great Huts has just the right amount of the best things that Jamaica has to offer. The cliff, the beach, the gully, the fire pit, the African House, the sculptures, the food, the drinks, the staff, the overall experience, was simply unmatched.
Great Huts; Greatly Healing & Rejuvinating!!!!
I had heard that Great Huts is an expereince with a difference, especially since it is said to have been an African village. Wow, I was not prepared for the level of healing and rejuvination I got from being there. All my senses were positively stimulated. The location and various scenery from beach, to cliff side, to beautiful flaura and fauna, not to mention the artwork!!! I was just constantly aesthetically stimulated. The food was awesome too. I stayed in the Fig Tree, well not literally in the tree, but yes the tree was part of the house/hut. I kept ooing and awing, the door, the artwork in my hut/house, everything was just an awesome expereince. As if all that audio and tactile stimulation wasn't enough, I got a real reggae treat on Saturday night, when Kingston Dub Club played at Africana House. There was lots of space for social distancing. I was upstairs vibing to the music, drinking in the gorgeous moon scape, taking pics of the dancers, mesmerised by the music. I was completely happy to be at Great Huts that weekend. And the staff, they were like friends, really efficient and friendly. Thank you Great Huts, for such a healing and rejuvinating experience, much love. ( Dicslaimer: this review does not fully express how appreciative I am of the Great Huts experience, as I'm still pretty speechless from the richness of my two days at Great Huts.) P.S. keep those awesome infused water and cool drinks coming Great Huts.
