More about the hotel
Tired and uninspiring
For the rate, quite disappointing. Whilst the initial check-in was good with very thorough COVID-19 checks, the hotel just felt tired and in good need of an update. The one-way system (for COVID-19) was good but the tape on the floor showing the direction and marking out 2m was coming up and a trip hazard. The room was clean and very comfortable, but just one spare socket nowhere near the bed - in this day and age, most people would expect to be able to charge their phones overnight at their bedside. The bathroom was however a shock. Broken toilet roll holder, lifting bathroom tiles and generally very shabby. The dining area and evening menu was very uninviting and uninspiring to the point that although we were struggling to find anywhere to eat, we never considered eating at the hotel. You had to book your breakfast slot (for COVID reasons) but it wasn’t busy. One of our party wanted gluten free bread with breakfast which apparently wasn’t a problem, but when it turned up it was the crust end, untoasted, because they “had run out” – why even bother. And the crumpled tablecloths didn’t help either. So in summary, a disappointment for a hotel with “Manor” it’s name. Only the comfortable large bed prevented this hotel getting a “Poor” rating.
Great place to stay!
Ignore the bad reviews. I have just spent a week at the Penmere Manor Hotel. My husband is working in the area for a few weeks and I was able to join him, for a small additional charge to cover breakfast. Really comfortable and clean bedroom and bathroom, with views over the garden. All of the staff who served us drinks and food at both ends of the day, as well as looking after reception, were friendly, polite and professional.
October break
Penmere manor was a lovely hotel rooms very comfortable and clean, very well equipped comfortable firm beds, quiet location, friendly staff Well organised for covid. 35 mins walk to harbour (hilly walk) !!
Superb staff
I stayed there for 17 nights. The staff are amazing, Lisa on reception is awesome, she knows the hotel like the back of her hand, very helpful and knowledgeable. The food in the restaurant is good, they don’t skimp on the portion sizes. Serving staff in the restaurant are amazing. A big shout out to Dom, Alice, Lauren & Libby. They were exceptional in getting to know us fir the duration of our stay. A shout out to Steven the bar keep, a good mixologist and funny with it. Watch him though, he’s a pudding thief😂😂😂. I thought my pudding was coming, but it was for another diner. I’d recommend this hotel to stay the business or pleasure.
Very rude owner
We stayed here for 9 nights during Covid restrictions, not easy for any business. The reception ladies and the housekeeper were exceptionally nice, professional friendly and helpful. The main gardens were lovely and well kept. We had a superior room in the garden suite, the gardens outside our french door were overgrown, unkempt and had weeds 14 inches high, very scruffy. Our room was tired with no shower curtain for the bath shower. The furniture in our room was very tatty, worn broken and the housekeeper admitted they were overdue for replacement. The breakfast food was very good when you eventually got it. One morning we were offered other patrons breakfasts 3 times before getting the right breakfast. The staff were young, inexperienced untrained and badly managed. One morning we had to wait 45 minutes for our breakfast order, having waited 10 minutes to order it, a different member of staff who was working in the restaurant that morning looked scruffy and shuffled around, we thought he was the odd job man helping out that day! I went to reception to ask to see the hotel manager too complain and was told that the new guy in the restaurant was the hotel owner! When he brought our breakfast after the 45 minute wait, I said to him this service or lack of it was appalling, his reply astoundingly was Good! I will see you later! He then disappeared never to be seen again! I said to the barman one evening that the bar may be busier, we were the only customers, if there was some background music to create an atmosphere, he said we are not allowed to play music cos of Covid!! How can you catch covid from background music?! In summary ,nice hotel, good food, nice swimming pool but extremely rude and uncaring owner.
