Wonderful, tranquil, amazing friendly staff, beautiful place
Reviewed 3 April, 2020
My boyfriend and I travelled on the 19-29th Feb 2020. He booked an ocean view room, on the top floor, floor 4, (*note, there are no lifts at this small hotel) stairs only) facing out toward the beautiful ocean and overlooking the gardens/pool/beach. The room were a good size, very clean, bathroom a good size with a shower etc. The room has tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, hairdryer, balcony with x2 chairs and a table, lots of wardrobe and shelving space, and a safe in the wardrobe. The bed were a little firm for me, however, it really wasn't an issue.
The staff are amazing, warm, friendly, and nothing is too much trouble at all. All the restaurant staff / bar staff were fabulous, and the Manager she were a delight! always happy with a smile on her face. As were Raz !
The food for a 3 star hotel, I thought were amazing. I have travelled the world and am still doing so, plus work as cabin crew so I have experienced so many hotels. For a small independent hotel, the food was varied, from wonderful buffet breakfast, to dinner - curries, meat, fish, salads, fruits, with sometimes a little bit of the "norm" some pasta etc but I loved the food. Buffet is on offer then they do a fixed 3/4 course dinner once or twice a week (I can't remember) this was equally as lovely.
Because its a smaller hotel, you get to know people, which is nice.
It were my boyfriends Birthday whilst we were away, and they made such an effort at dinner, decorated the table, and made a lovely cake with firework candles etc it was lovely.
The pool is a decent size in the garden, not that anyone really used it, and why would you, when this hotel sits on a lovely white sandy beach! We had no issue getting sun beds, which are on the beach and on the garden, they provide towels. The staff will come to the beach to see if you would like drinks. We personally tip, bearing in mind this is a poor country. The staff deserved the tips for sure.!
The beach is lovely white sand beach, however, you need swim shoes, as going into the ocean, the sand is mixed with finely crushed coral/shell, so it will hurt your feet heading in/out, but it's not an issue, the ocean is stunning blues/turquoise, and lovely to swim in.
We walked the length of the beach, it was gorgeous, and we headed left along the beach and followed it round which led around the coastline.
BOAT TRIPS: okay, pay attention folks! The hotel staff and everyone will tell you this, but I will mention it as well, DO NOT BUY ANY BOAT TRIPS FROM THE RASTA BEACH DUDE, OR FROM ANYONE ELSE whom works from the local harbour, who will approach you if Ravi is out on a boat trip. only USE RAVI from Silver Beach Hotel. His boat trip was the BEST ! His lovely cousin took us out from the hotel beach, we saw so much it was wonderful. We went with two friends we made at the hotel, so it were just the four of us. Ravis cousin is so knowledgeable as he is a local fisherman there. We went to the old disused lighthouse, and got lucky as we spotted dolphins en route, which isn't guaranteed! It was just an added bonus, a family of four dolphins, so we stopped to look at them for a while. Then we went along side this island with green vegetation, and he showed us giant tortoises on the island! I had never seen these before, so it was fantastic!!!! We then snorkelled and saw some lovely fish and corals. Then we went on to Il aux Cerf beach, the little waterfall nearby, and he took us where there were fish to snorkel. He dropped us at Il Aux Cerf beach and we had no time pressure at all. So we had a drink at the beach bar and chilled as we had done a previous trip with another company and it was awful!! Ravis cousin en route down to the waterfall, pointed out there were monkeys in the mangrove trees, I spotted them and were so excited to see them in the wild, he asked us to bring bananas now I know why! He quietly let the boat up to the edge of the trees, told me to hold my arm out and the monkey reached down and took the banana from my hand ! was amazing. We had drinks on board Rum !!! yum! and soft drinks.
And Ravis price was spot on for the area.
I can't remember the boat company who came to the beach and sold us our first boat trip, but they wore blue t-shirts, they tried to take extra cash from us by using hard sales tactics trying to confuse you over prices, add on costs etc its a well known sales tactic, so you end up so confused you don't know what you're paying for! That trip was terrible, once they get your money they don't care at all. The boat drivers don't interact, or smile, there's a lot of you on each boat, they rush you around, especially at Il Aux Cerf beach, and the lunch on a beach was rubbish, and we had paid for lobster and they said they had none! So, my advice is don't use anyone else apart from RAVI, whom is vetted and works for the hotel.
But please do not let this put you off, as there are no hawkers on the beach as this resort is a quiet tranquil non touristy side of the island (East coast side). I guess boat trips are the main competition in such a small community.
If you're looking for a busy town/resort with night life in a town, this is not for you. The hotel has entertainment, however, it is over an hour transfer from the airport. The local village has a few restaurants and a ATM and the boat harbour.
We truly had the best time, and would definitely return to the Silver Beach Hotel. For value for money this was spot on for a 3 star, in fact, I would say it was way better than a 3 star!! 3 stars because the hotel has no other amenities I'd say, like a spa salon etc
A big thank you to all the staff for making our stay utterly delightful. And Ravi, and your cousin, thank you for the BEST boat trip.
