Great potential wasted

Pros: Great location, good property, very nice beach, good food and service in the restaurants
Cons: Very poor maintenance and upkeep. Pool towels invariably not available. No one monitoring or cleaning the pool during the day. Aircon wasn't working for 2 days of my stay, making it impossible to stay in the room.
Summary - I could see when it was a great resort. But hurricanes and COVID have clearly lead to cost cutting to a point that it is nowhere near worth-it for the prices they charge at the moment.
The Perfect Refresher

After well over a year of not leaving the house, even once, we knew where we would go once fully vaccinated - The Bahamas. Specifically, The Grand Lucayan. We went there years ago and loved the experience. Understanding that it wasn't the same exact property, but the sister one, and that not all restaurants were open, we said 'let's do it!'. We opted for the 'all inclusive' package.
A wonderfully helpful Cartier made our reservations - and we were thrilled to meet her once there.
Our room was great - so so close to the water and palm trees.
We knew the obstacles - Grand Bahama Island had two hurricanes only to be followed months later by the Covid pandemic. So we weren't expecting the 'extras'. Much of the market down the street was closed. No prob. Yes, it was the same menu everyday at the main restaurant - again, we got it, and the food was amazing. Every single meal. Don't know how they could keep stocked with so few guests, but they never disappointed.
And one reviewer mentioned the hot water issue. We simply asked (after two rather chilly showers) and were told how to turn the spigot. Our bad.
It was quiet, peaceful, beautiful - what more could one ask for? And the fact that the Bahamas have such strict Covid protocols in place eased our minds - though we are vaccinated.
The beach bar, Waves, was so much fun! Good food there as well.
A huge applause for Terry (Waves and Lobby Bar), Patrick, Rashaud(sp) and the ladies in Waves who made every day FUN, Cohen especially in Portobellos - as well as Angelica and another wonderful guy who was there the first 2 nights - and especially Delano who got us to our room, and helped us throughout the week, along with helping us gather our things when leaving, and Terenzia (sp) in the lobby.
It was the best week ever and we would NOT hesitate to return, simply because of the wonderful, warm people there.
Beautiful Beach, Fantastic Staff!

The hurricane and the Pandemic did not do this island any good. The hotel is a shadow of its former self) approximately 6/8's of the property is closed and in disrepair). Lighthouse Point is the only part the the Grand Lucayan that is up and running. I did hear from several sources at hotel and around the island that the hotel has been recently acquired by Royal Caribbean Int. which, I hope, will bring this resort back to its former glory.
The staff was FANTASTIC! (Including the maintenance and security). They couldn't have been happier to have us and were more than thankful and grateful for our visit.
That being said, the hotel had its drawbacks. The elevator smelled moldy and musty. We took the stairs the whole time (there are only 3 stories). The rooms were nice and very roomy, but the carpeting was outdated, the slider had to be repaired (it was), and the Wifi was for the most part, non-functioning. And unfortunately, the day before we were supposed to leave, the air conditioning failed in the whole facility. This was unfortunate for both the staff and guests as the rooms were HOT! I understand that the their "Chiller" broke and they needed a whole new system. They did move us and the rest of the guests to a neighboring hotel for the night ( it was right across the road). We were able to continue to access our room and the rest of the facilities at Lighthouse Pointe.
The beach and the pools were great and well maintained. The gym was hot and not very clean. There were wipes but I don't think the floors were ever washed.
They offer an all inclusive option, but we chose a la Carte (which was the best choice for us). There was only 1 restaurant that offered breakfast and dinner (Portabello's) and the poolside one (Waves) offered lunch. The menu was the same every day.
The lobby bar was limited in its selections ( if you are a wine connoisseur or looking for your favorite Vesper Martini, this is not your happy place).
We ate at Portobello's once for dinner (it was good) and had breakfast there every day we stayed (it was fine). There are good restaurants within walking distance from hotel.
The Beach and the pool were great and well maintained.
