Quirky and historic but …… ☹️

Opinión escrita el 30 de enero de 2023

Everything started really well. We arrived well before check in but were met by a lovely housekeeper who really pulled the stops out to get the both rooms ready early for us and our friends. Unfortunately the rest of our stay was not really very good: The bedroom looked good - stylish, moody colours, good lighting, funky copper bath in the room but cannot recommend based on our experience of no hot water (and anyway there was only a handheld shower in the bath), a bed that was so old, grotty and saggy that I slept in it fully dressed and a really disgustingly stained toilet. Our experience of the services was also well below expectations. There was no dinner, the bar closed at 7 and there was no breakfast service the following day (even though our friends had been pre-charged for breakfast). All in all I could not recommend anyone to stay at the Archangel

A total disaster

We booked the hotel for a renunion lunch. Arrived on time to be told the chef hadn’t turned up so we couldn’t eat there We had to quickly find an alternative but were not really successful Very disappointed with the whole experience And to add insult to injury the hotel e mailed me to thank me for choosing the Archangel

Rundown, dirty and not as sold on website!

Opinión escrita el 12 de enero de 2023

The check-in experience was not a good start - waiting to be 'served' at the bar surrounded by dirty glasses, waiting for the bar person to finish mixing a gin and tonic before we could get our room key was a bad experience. We were shown to our outside annex room, the stairs are up a steep metal staircase (which would be so easy to slip and hurt yourself). The door to our room was really stiff and my partner even struggled to slam it open. We were disappointed not to have a bigger room or one with a freestanding bath so we asked if we could upgrade. The barman said he would go and find out and come to let us know - 30 mins later we had enough waiting and went to the bar to find him mixing drinks behine the bar - we had been totally forgotten. (and no upgrade available...apparently) Part of the reason I booked this as a Christmas treat for my partner was the allure of dining in the 'floating glass restaurant' which was sold front and centre on their website. I was really disappointed to find out the restaurant is now in the tiny and cramped front room of the building which had about 6 tables. The service was very slow and they had run out of many things, the wine we ordered wasnt in stock, there was no starter which we chose, rump steak, no cheesecake. The food was tasty but I ordered the flat iron steak, rare, which came out over medium - really overcooked. I was going to send it back but the waitress didnt appear for at least 15 minutes by which time I ate the sides as I didnt want my partner to sit eating alone! They proceeded to clean tables around us while we were still finishing our food. Squirting disinfectant and laying up for breakfast made us feel rushed and was grim in such a small space. The toilets were a disgrace- broken loo roll holder and roll all over the floor. Scratched graffiti on the walls, dirty toilet, 1 of the 2 taps broken. The hand dryer was burnt out and only option to dry your hands was loo roll which I find disgusting. We went to sit in one of the side snug rooms after dinner which are cute but again had dirty glasses everywhere and the furniture had ripped upholstery - generally a mess plus freezing cold. Breakfast was really good - we both went for the full english and it was delicious. Our room was ok nothing more. The view is of a horrible flat roof and walls, the tiny bathroom has smallest sink ever, broken / removed shower door so the water went everywhere and soaked the bathroom.

Awful customer service

Opinión escrita el 7 de enero de 2023

Myself and my family were on holiday visiting the area. We booked this restaurant in advance, they were good via phone organising a table to accommodate a baby and a dog. When we arrived to the restaurant we were not acknowledged at all, no one seated us and look at us blankly whilst around5 staff members were behind the bar. Eventually we were seated after 10 mins, menus were not brought out so we helped ourselves to a pile on the desk. We ordered the sea bass and burgers. The sea bass was an incredibly small portion, we had to ask for additional chips. The cost was £23 and although it tasted good it was not £23 worth of food. We also asked for two portions of chips and one was brought out. The burger was described as brisket, this was not what was served. It was more like a normal beef burger. There was supposed to be a side of coleslaw which was not on the plate , the waiters response was ‘ sometimes the chef leaves it off as people don’t eat it’. We asked our waiter for sauces, they were brought out half way through our meal. The staff member went away to get them, another one came back telling us a member of her staff was crying because we were all so rude to her. This was not the case. We waited patiently, sauces did not arrive. We asked a second time and the response was ‘ a please would go a long way’. Following this , every staff member was rude and would not approach our table. When the portion of chips were delivered it was slammed down on the table in an extremely rude manner. We asked to speak with the manager. The manager took around 15 minutes to arrive to the table, at this point we just wanted to pay and leave. The manager was calm and understanding. He listened appropriately , understood our concerns and did not charge us for our meal. We were happy with the compensation for the shocking experience and felt it was a fair way to settle things. We eat out a lot and we have never experienced such bad customer service. We will not return to this restaurant ever again. During our experience the table next to us had ordered dessert, it did not arrive so they asked for the bill and wanted to leave. We were not the only people experiencing poor service.

Charming centrally located and great value coaching inn

Brilliant value and packed with charm, really recommend a stay at this property. Located right in the centre of Frome, really comfy bedroom, nicely fitted out. Only downside is to be aware of some noise from the courtyard where the room backed right onto - but this stops at 11pm so fine if you're out and about.
