No Service

Reviewed 13 april, 2022

Waited for service and our presence was ignored even though a member of staff saw us. We eventually left and went somewhere else. The George has gone downhill over the decades sadly. Such a disappointment as this is an historic building with an interesting history. I have known it all my lu.

Hit and Miss

Reviewed 10 april, 2022

We’ve eaten here quite a few times since we live in the village but unfortunately it is so hit and miss. Sometimes food comes with fries, sometimes wedges, sometimes they are crispy and delicious, sometimes they are soggy and horrid. There is no consistency. Despite being local the staff don’t seem to recognise us and are not friendly to us Our most recent visit was the cherry on the cake. We arrived for Sunday lunch and were ignored by several members of staff who walked past us standing by the door waiting. We were then given a table and after waiting some time our order was taken. Food arrived quickly but what arrived was hugely disappointing. Our roast dinners had only a couple of tiny thin slithers of meat, equivalent of about 1.5 pieces of sliced ham that you might put in a child’s sandwich. We were given no cauliflower cheese and no Yorkshire pudding despite seeing other guests plates which had them on and despite it being listed as part of the meal on the menu. Instead, it seems we were given about 40 non peeled baby carrots to ‘compensate’. The waitress did not explain to us why half our food was missing or why the portion of meat was so meagre. The waitress did not come back even once to check everything was okay. We then saw 2/3 waitresses pick up their coats and bags and go home whilst there were still guests in the pub. We complained when the bill was brought over about half of our food being missing but we were still charged full price and given a poor excuse. In my opinion, every plate should be the same whether it’s the first plate of the day or the last. Despite this being our local pub, I honestly don’t think we’ll bother coming back. We would rather drive further afield to another pub.

Hit and miss food

Reviewed 23 march, 2022

A little up and down unfortunately. On entering the bar area we were met with the unpleasant smell of stale beer, which is off putting, and whilst common some years ago is thankfully rare in pubs these days. We were seated away from the bar however, not in the restaurant, but it was fine. The room was a little cold, but the staff turned the gas- fire on for us which sorted it out. The food was unfortunately a bit hit and miss. For a starter we ordered prawns and black-pudding in a crumb, and the terrine. They had run out of terrine so we instead ordered gin-cured trout. We were then asked if we'd mind gin-cured smoked salmon. We weren't sure how one cures already smoked fish, but trusted the chef and agreed. What we received was best described as gin rinsed smoked salmon. I'm not sure it will catch on. The prawns were not very good. A bowl of dry crumb, with some prawns and pieces of black pudding hidden at the bottom. It was like the lucky dip in sawdust at a school fete, and it tasted only of "crumb". A garlic butter or sauce, and a lot less crumb would transform this dish. Things were redeemed with the main courses however. The pheasant pie was excellent, with nicely cooked vegetables, and a rich gravy. The burger, with black pudding, was a very good burger indeed, as were the chips. It's a shame, had we come in just for a main course this review would have been worth an extra star. The starters however let the kitchen down. The wine was nice, as was the beer, and the service was fine. So all in all a pleasant evening, but the food needs some work.

Great Stay

Reviewed 23 january, 2022

Booked to stay for New Year’s Eve and very pleased we did. Made to feel welcome from the outset and the room was excellent. Food was really good and the pub has a nice traditional feel. Overall very impressed and will certainly be visiting again.
