More about the hotel
Great staff, old building
This big hotel looks like it needs a big renovation throughout, as rooms are quite old, with a dark and aged atmosphere. Cleanliness levels are not great either. Breakfast is not varied either, with just the standard coffee machine, some eggs, bacon, cereals, oranges and toasts. The only big pro is the highly professional staff, who were all very polite, kind and helpful. There was no hotel parking, though they have a discount for guests who park in the nearby car park.
Decent experience considering Covid
Stayed as part of a Rail Discoveries package and we thought it was decent for what it was. Good:- For this type of hotel the room was spacious and comfortable enough, the hotel very centrally located and easy to get to from stations or nearby Q Park. As someone who is a more anxious traveller because of covid the efforts gone to to address the risks were reassuring. The staff were universally gracious, friendly and helpful, although unfortunately a very softly spoken voice with a heavy accent and from behind a mask made hearing what we were being told difficult to understand sometimes. The evening menu is VERY basic, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and size of the pizzas we ordered. Not so good:- The hotel itself was warm and our room, with no heating/aircon was extremely warm on arrival, despite it being October. The solution was the aircon which was quite noisy, blew very cold air down on us and didn't seem to be able to keep the room at a comfortable temperature even with all our attempts to adjust. A short walk away is the Q Park which cost us £38 for 4 nights by paying the hotel rather than the Q Park ticket machine. The hotel ticket didn't work, but using the intercom at the carpark we were allowed out when we said we had paid Holiday Inn.
Handled Covid restrictions well
Not easy to travel or stay anywhere whilst Coronavirus restrictions apply, but this hotel has handled the situation well from reception to breakfast arrangements. No seating for breakfast on Sunday but other days - all OK - very limited evening menu.
So awful we left
The rooms are really not acceptably clean, at any time but especially in these times. The issues: carpets not hoovered properly, large bits of dirt all over the floor, high amounts of dust on many surfaces e.g tv, lamp switches, table, in the air, to the point that a quick wipe with a tissue came back black with dirt, table not cleaned, bits of food still on it. When we reported the issues and were given a different room all of the above were still an issue plus the sheets were stained, the bathroom tap was coming away from the sink and there were brown (drink?) stains down the wall. When I reported to reception again, all that was suggested was to move to another room. Given that 2 rooms had the same poor cleaning, I didn't have reason to believe that any other room would have been cleaned properly, so I said I'd rather leave. I wasn't offered any help with this (odd, considering Holiday Inn have several establishments in the city) or even a taxi to a new place. I did receive 2 bottles of water and have claimed a refund. I wasn't expecting top quality in terms of decor from this hotel but basic cleaning is important, no matter what star rating a hotel is.
Great central location
Had a 2 night stay. Location very central and close to local amenities. Rooms basic but it is a Express hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Did not take car so cannot comment on parking availability. Would stay again.
