Lovely old monastery
A real privilege to stay in this place. Huge, calm and in its extensive grounds. Beautiful country around. History surrounds and one can visit the chapel. Drinks in the old quadrangle and dinner was in the separate restaurant. Nothing particularly special but altogether very pleasant. Staff were all excellent. My only suggestion would be a little guide to the history of the place (maybe there is one. I forgot to ask). Rather bizarrely there is an information centre on salmon across the world. They have so many buildings perhaps they were struggling for a purpose. Highly recommended.
Top service, fantastic location
We had reserved a comfort double room for the weekend and on check-in got upgraded to a suite room for free! The service was perfect. The breakfast spread is simply spectacular with fresh honey from the Apiary on ground. The close proximity to the Harz Mountains offers a wonderful option for a night stay with a flair of the Middle Ages, making it a good location for wedding parties. This was after all a Cloister now converted into a Hotel with their own Apiary and Brewery. My stay here was fantastic!
Okay, but nothing special
We booked a room for two nights via a booking website and the pictures on the internet looked really nice. We weren't aware of the fact that we had booked "Economy" but this fact was made clear to us in a rather condescending way when checking in. My husband asked about wi-fi and only then were we told that our room was not in the main building but in a small one nearby. In fact, we didn't expect much in advance since the hotel is marked three ***S, but a room like ours which was just plain wasn't shown on the internet. Staff wasn't too friendly but this might have been due to the fact that we had booked "Economy" :(... and rejected the offer of a really expensive breakfast
So pretty, so quiet, so unusual for Americans
This is a former convent that added a brewery and some other working buildings in the l8th century, but that kept (and remodeled) its chapel. It has been turned into a hotel of a high standard, frequented by wedding parties, adult travelers looking for someplace different, and people seeking quiet and what my college dormitory house-mother called 'gracious living.' There's a little path outside for a stroll past the herb garden, a bit of woods, some farm buildings, the fish ladder, the brewery buildings, and the chapel. Inside there's a library but probably the books are in German, since few Americans are likely to find this. It's best to have a car to drive into the countryside where this is located, but there are taxis to nearby train stations. The city of Goslar is nearby, and it's absolutely beautiful; it was not bombed during the Second World War so you can see what old German towns were like. Our room, billed as a Superior room, wass neither spacious not memorable, but it looked out on a quiet rear lawn with geometric abstract chaises longues set in the middle of it. The desk was made by the Drexel company, an American firm if I'm not mistaken, and each room seems to be furnished differently with pseudo-antiques. Dinner was good; another less formal restaurant is across a road. The staff was very courteous and well trained. Breakfast was abundant, as usual in Germany.. The amenities and setting are probably considered luxurious in this area, but the price is much lower than that of a country hotel in the USA or UK
A wonderful retreat
A visit that could not be faulted, from a huge spacious room overlooking a sun drenched cloister to long corridors that in years gone by the monks would have quietly returned to their rooms after mealtimes and prayers. Luxury in abundance and a huge breakfast to boot. Outside the grounds provided a calm atmosphere and plenty to do. Great for visiting the wonderful ancient city of Goslar just 10 minutes drive away. Visit again, you bet.
