Great, convenient hotel with excellent service!

I booked this (through the website, which was the best rate) the day I was travelling on a last minute getaway and it worked out perfectly!
It’s a super convenient location in front of Grindelwald station - I was grateful to just be a few steps from my room after returning from a long day of hiking. In spite what you’d expect, given proximity to station, it has beautiful views. I was lucky to be on the 4th floor with a balcony, (they were kind enough to upgrade me to a bigger room w balcony!) but there’s also a nice balcony deck on the 4th floor for all guests. A very nice place to unwind in the evening or have your morning coffee.
All the staff are lovely, from cleaning staff, restaurant and reception. Great combination of efficient, no-fuss and easy manner, and genuine smiles to boot. It made me feel very welcome (especially appreciated as a solo traveler) and I have to say that I’ve not experienced service this on-point in my 4 years here! (I’m Swiss-based but from Malaysia)
Special mention to Jeremy at reception who was an absolute star! It was so nice to be welcomed after a long journey by someone who enjoys helping guests. His recommendations were excellent and fit the bill exactly for what I was looking for and he had answers to every question! I didn’t have the chance to do much research beforehand (as I usually do) so I really appreciated the specificity and level of detail he provided. And best of all was his good cheer and friendliness.
I was meant to stay 2 nights and then go onwards elsewhere, but I ended up extending to 4 nights because of all the reasons above!
Oh, and good breakfast too!
Perfect location, friendly and clean!

Visited here in July 2020. Booked on the day of arrival and the lady working on reception was friendly both taking our booking over the phone and when we arrived to check in.
The hotel is a traditional Swiss hotel, slightly dated but it just adds charm.
All staff we encountered were friendly.
Hotel was clean.
Breakfast had a decent offering and although buffet style was as covid safe as they could make it, one way system, gloves for each guest to serve breakfast. Hand sandstone around the hotel too.
Location is excellent, close to the train station, we could hear the trains occasionally but nothing that disturbed us, if you think you’ll be disturbed book a south facing room.
Would not hesitate to stay in Grindelwald and the Derby Swiss again!
Loved our stay!

Great hotel located at the center. Everything was perfect: room size (not too spacious but just right nevertheless for our party of 3, ie with a 5 year old), size of bathroom, add-ons like chocolates, water, even some stuff to take for hiking. Service was also great: we kept going to reception to ask for tips on where to go and what to do and the ladies there (Christina and Marianne) were very helpful, humorous and patient with (a looooootttt of) our questions. Breakfast was also great with staff that was warm, welcoming and did everything with a smile. Such a cozy place that we recommend 100%! Will stay here again for sure!

Our small ski club enjoyed everything about the Derby. Location, meals, staff, atmosphere, and views could not be beat. All the staff contributed to making our stay enjoyable. Right next to the train station and an easy walk to the shops, bars, and sports complex. Rooms were quiet and nicely decorated. There were a number of comfortable sitting areas where our group could gather. Food and service excellent. Our skiers even took a try at curling at the sports center. Thank you for welcoming us!

We stayed at The Derby in January on a family vacation. As advertised, this is a fantastic traditional Swiss hotel, a great location, friendly staff, excellent food and very comfortable rooms.
We arrived in from California, a bit weary and tired but very grateful for the warm welcome, nice room and the cold beer, thank you!
The front desk staff are very helpful and accommodating. The waiters and waitresses are fun and professional delivering great service and tasty food from the kitchen. Grizinya convinced us to try the Swiss wine which was beautiful.
The location to the trains and ski lifts cannot be beaten. I hate walking in ski boots, so having the train at your doorstep is super convenient. The hotel / train station is in the middle of downtown, so staying at The Derby could not be better.
The Derby delivers the complete package for a traditional Swiss family hotel.
