More about the hotel
Comfy, well-located hotel
Hangzhou Huagang HNA Resort is located within a few minutes walk of West Lake on the west side, making it ideal for exploring the charms of the water and surrounding features. I took a taxi from Hangzhou East rail station and it cost about 60 Yuan, so not bad at all considering the time and distance. The staff were friendly, helpful and could speak enough English for me to get by. The room was comfortable providing a good night's sleep; the bed was firm and the curtains provided a reasonable blackout. Moreover, the shower was powerful and hot. The walls were a tad flimsy, nevertheless, the room was sufficiently quiet. As part of a conference, I ate in the dining room on numerous occasions at lunch and dinner - the food was pretty standard, but was broad in variety so there was always something new to try or a favourite to stick with. The WiFi worked reasonably well, when you could get access, which took a bit of help from the hotel staff, but you're not going to be happy if you intend on streaming episodes or movies... Overall, I gave the hotel a 3 rather than a 4 star review, because of the WiFi and the fact the building interior appears quite dated. I certainly wouldn't choose to stay here again, preferring other options, but wouldn't mind if I didn't have a choice.
Hotel close to West lake
We pick this hotel because it is situated on the west side of the West lake, Hungzhou. It is an old hotel and is in the midst of "cleaning" up. The bed is soft but room is clean. In one of our room you can see the mould forming on the wall, Other than that it was ok. The hotel is 3 minutes walk to the west-lake. The buffet breakfast has wide varieties of foods compare to other hotels in China. You need to buy the package that come with the breakfast because there is no other shop around the hotel that offer breakfast. For that price, I think is worth it.
Average experience at Hangzhou Huagang HNA Resort
Attended a conference held at this hotel. Stayed there for 4 nights in May. The hotel is located near one of the entrances of West Lake. If you are looking at easy access to the Lake, then it is literally a stone's throw away. Otherwise, it is about 5 km or thereabout to the Hangzhou Xin Tian Di, an enclave of mid to high-mid range of eateries and pubs. Graded my experiences at this hotel average on the following basis: i) Clean sheets and towels and clean rooms but overall feel of the rooms and hotel's environment is no frills. ii) Difficult to get a cab after 7 pm because of its location. You either have to ask the receptionist to book a car for you for which it will cost more or you have to get a local Uber equivalent. For the latter, you need to have sure that your credit card payment is linked to China's banks and not your country's. That said, the front desk personnel are more service oriented compared to my experience in a luxury hotel in Shanghai. The staff here smile more genuinely and are less clinical in their interaction with you.
Ageing hotel in need of renovation
Stayed here for a couple of nights during our recent visit to Hangzhou. The rooms are spacious but in need of modernisation. The toilet blocked several times during our visit. Weekends are noisy with raucous wedding celebrations and accompanying karaoke sessions. Didn't go on too late at least! The breakfast is typically Chinese with limited Western options. Fruit juice more like squash. Local environment is great being a short stroll from the lake but it's inconvenient for the city and there's better options in Hangzhou given the downsides.
Great location, average service, in need of renovation
Very scenic walks adjacent to the hotel. Rooms badly in need of refurbishment- peeling paint, tiles missing in shower (holes plugged with wood) but spacious enough. Food OK but fairly repetitive day-to-day. Hard to find staff with even passable English
