Handicapped guest locked out of suite by staff and followed with a credit card machine

Reviewed 11 february, 2023

We booked a suite and informed the staff in advance that I am a handicapped amputee. Everything seemed fine aside from the restaurant having no English labels on food (awful for this brand) and serving the same food for lunch and dinner with many options unavailable by 630. Not up to brand standards. We were initially happy enough so we added a night to suite 1601 as my wife WAS a happy 20 year customer of the brand. We spoke to a manager and were assured it was taken care of. The next day I was injured and suffered a broken prosthetic leg. We returned to the hotel in great pain. We arrived at our suite to find the staff had locked us out with my medical items and medicines inside. I had to limp and nearly crawl to the desk. They demanded full payment of over 3000 rmb! We explained our money was in our room while they debated letting us back in. They then followed me to the room where they discovered that the door didn’t work and left me trapped in the hallway in great pain. Staff reappeared and I thought they were coming to help but they were actually following me with a credit card machine. Did the hotel email text or call to advise there was any problem? No. They simply locked a twenty year customer out of their suite and trapped them with no medicine. This inhumane and ridiculous lapse of service will keep me from ever returning

Ask for Grace

Reviewed 23 december, 2022

1st impressions of the Hotel Grace at the coffee garden has exceptional customer service! She was happy to serve me and she did all that she could (including looking at food on apps) to make sure I had a good lunch. This was great considering I’d traveled all morning and I was ready to eat and rest. The room service I received was great! If Grace is not a manger already , she should be promoted. The hotel itself has a great river view of ice and snow world! Also, the room is clean with a cozy bed. The check in process was interesting, the doorman greeted me once I was inside the hotel. Honestly, I totally understand because it’s COLD in Harbin. Once at the front desk, I was told I needed a green code to eat in the restaurants and I escorted myself to my room because no one showed me to my room. I’m looking forward to dinner and breakfast because Grace and the food service team are doing a great job.

A decent stay

Reviewed 2 january, 2021

We really enjoyed our 3 nights at the Shangrila. Following some negative reviews about the hotel we went thinking it wouldn’t be that great but actually it was. River views were beautiful, rooms were a little smaller as mentioned but they were really comfortable and warm. The staff in the club lounge were excellent and breakfast up there was very decent. There was a buffet and you could order off the menu too, about 15 different items made to order. Couldn’t fault it! The evening drinks and food was also good quality and very generous. Didn’t eat in the main restaurant as club lounge met our needs. All the staff were excellent and many spoke good English, which was helpful if you have poor Chinese, like me. So yes the hotel is a bit dated but everything else more than made up for it. Having been to Harbin twice, I liked the location as it was well positioned to get across to the ice festival (10 minutes by car) but also you can walk along the river into town (30 minutes). Go with managed expectations on the modernity of the hotel and you will enjoy it I’m sure

This hotel is nothin better than a Chinese 3 star hotel. Service is OK but the rooms are extremely small for China....comparable to HK size. There is no separate shower and there is only a hand shower and crappy shower curtain in the small bath tub. Completely unacceptable. The food, service and ambiance at the breakfast was like a cafeteria. The common areas of the hotel were tired and shabby. Frankly it's just crap, do not bother wasting your money. Stay at another hotel if you want to be in the city. If you want a good luxury experience then stay at the JW Marriott across the river and take taxis wherever you need to go. DO NOT STAY AT THIS RIP OFF CHINESE QUALITY HOTEL. I complained to Shangri La and they have done absolutely noting about it. This is the second time I have stayed at one of their hotels and it will be the last. I don't know how they have the front to call themselves a luxury hotel brand when they have properties like this.
