A Beautiful Old Building. Shame about the bed

Reviewed 14 october, 2020

The Old Deanery is a beautiful old building with heaps of history, it’s a little tired but that can be forgiven as I guess their income is significantly reduced during these trying times, however, I really feel that if the mattresses are of the same poor and worn out quality in all rooms as the one in room 3 then they should look to change them quickly. Our sleep quality was so poor that my wife and I were awake several times during the night and I actually ached when I got up the next morning, thankfully we only stayed one night as I don’t think I could have even contemplated a second. Sort out the mattresses and it would improve the overall quality 10 fold.

Beautiful place in Ripon

Reviewed 13 october, 2020

Stayed for one nice, b&b, place is fab, all covid measures brill. Stayed in the executive room at the front room number 1 which had a chrome kingsize mirrored bed very comfy. The room was at the front of the building with amazing views overlooking the Cathedral which was wonderful. Full english brekki very good. The only negative for us was the cathedral bells ringing in the middle of the night woke us several times but take some ear plugs and you should be fine. Would recommend.

Disappointed

Reviewed 22 september, 2020

We know The Old Deanery of old when it was a truly fine experience to visit so maybe our expectations were too high but we were sadly disappointed by our recent 3 night stay. The whole place felt sadly neglected and we had a couple of things go a little bit awry: for example the light pull in the bathroom broke the first time we used it making it impossible to turn off the very bright light. We were told nobody could mend it until the following day which meant we had to spend the night with the light on. The advertised free wifi was intermittent in the bedroom although it worked downstairs in the public areas. Unfortunately there is only one sofa in the whole place (there used to be lots) so sitting downstairs means sitting at a dining table on a dining chair. It states in the bedroom blurb that "breakfast includes continental options accompanied by a freshly cooked breakfast." There are no continental options. When we booked we spoke to someone about vegan options and were told that wouldn't be a problem. There were no vegan options. All the cooked options are egg based so we had to pick the vegan ingredients from the full Yorkshire option. Beans, a mushroom and a tomato every morning. Having said all this the room was clean, comfortable and quiet and the garden is very nice. We understand the place is closing at the end of the year. We hope that if it reopens as a hotel that it gets a full refurbishment and that attention is paid to detail.

a little dated but to be recommended

Reviewed 15 september, 2020

we stayed here for only one night (but wish it had been more) but thoroughly recommend it. Very good value for money. We needed somewhere dog friendly and this is the place to be. We had a large room with a clean and spacious en-suite overlooking the cathedral. Even though its centrally located, it is very quiet. Yes the room we had could do with a make-over, but everything was perfectly clean, very comfortable bed, fluffy towels and overall value for money. All staff we encountered, were exceptionally friendly, courteous and helpful. Breakfast was lovely and overall I would recommend this hotel for convenience to Ripon town centre, dog friendliness and comfort.

Lovely afternoon tea

Reviewed 10 september, 2020

Delicious afternoon tea at a window table looking out onto the cathedral. Quiches and scones were warm and there was a good mix of sandwiches. Tables were well distanced and all staff wore masks so it felt very Covid safe.
