Beautiful building and lovely staff

Reviewed 1 may, 2022

I was taken here for a surprise hen weekend because I love gothic buildings. The place is so gorgeous and well cared for. The gardens are vast and beautiful and the rooms (we were upgrade to a suite by the lovely reception) was huge, elegant and had a bath tub that would comfortably fit six people! The chef is very talented and the scallops and steaks were perfectly cooked. The breakfast which is served buffet style was plentiful and of a high quality. What really made the place so lovely was the staff who were clearly having to work extra hard due to a shortage of people and they were so kind and helpful. Running a place of that size is a challenge and it doesn’t always go smoothly but it doesn’t matter because everyone was working so hard and I would love to visit again. Thank you so much for looking after us with endless Aperol Spritz and your easy friendly manners.

Pleasant

Very pleasant stay, staff are friendly, very old with lots of historic features. Sadly for us the service was very slow at dinner, our starter never arrived. I asked 3 times for extra butter at breakfast which never came, coffee came at the end of breakfast sitting when we ordered it when we first went in. We waited almost an hour for our room.. said check in 3pm! The rooms are clean until you start looking further, layers of dust on switches, skirting boards, main table, remotes and lamps. The bath is not for the faint hearted, the overlap to get in is high and wide, a definite hazard. The grounds are absolutely stunning 😍

A bit lf a let down

Reviewed 20 april, 2022

Stayed herw for a Saturday night after a recommendation from friends. The property itself is stunning and has a real look of grandeur about it. Stayed in a room on the second flooe and thus is where the issues started. The room at first glance was well turned out and a good size. We seemed to have an extra free standing small rediator in the bedroom which seemed rather odd. Its reason as the eveing drew on though became clear. A couple of the windows wouldn't close properly leaving a 5cm gap at the top. Pair this with radiators in the room that only got hot the top 10 cms et voila. Why not sort the windows and bleed the radiators? By 1 am the room was freezing with the outside temperature being -2 and both myself and my partner had to resort to sleeping in the house coats under the duvet. Not the best. In the morning going to the toilet there was a smell of sewage coming from the bathroom. It seemed some form of pluming issue was causing the pipes to bubble air up into our bath. Not the best thing to wake up to. Having run the taps for a few minutes and sprayed some deodorant the bathroom was passable so I jumped in the shower. This was a very luke warm shower at best (that was until the entire shower mixer mechanism came off in my hand). This had clearly been broken for a while and been super glued back together. Shame the hotel didn't see fit to fix anything and still let the room out. Moving to breakfast, get in early, like when it opens early as there was no bacon and only 2 fried eggs by 9am. A lot of people were stood around waiting so I had some cereal amd toast and called it a day. We checked out and I gave the mixer unit to the receptionist saying they might want to fix it. I was offered some compensation as they said this wasn't how they wanted me to remember our stay. Well three weeks later and the offer of a partial refund hasn't materialised. The refund is neither here nor there it seems from other reviews that this isn't an isolated incident. It's a shame as the detial here really lets down what could be a very nice hotel. Senior management are obviously more interested in money than the guests. Unfortunately the property is let down by a poor attention to detail and a very relaxed attitude to issues.
