Really made my stay

Absolutely lovely hostel, everyone was incredibly friendly and the staff are great to chat with over the day. Open lounge where guests happily sit and chat, everyone was welcome. Nice kitchen with everything available, definitely worth the stay.
The most disgraceful host, ever.

This is your typical, grotesque hostel, but the most disgusting feature is the attitude of the man who runs it, Joe. It was otherwise a cheap and nasty stay, with your typical unclean, basic facilities, and chilled hostel roommates who seemed to understand how ridiculous Joe is, but one experience on this trip is what I must write about in this review - something that is never acceptable in any line of customer service. Now, I honestly didn’t know self cleaning was hostel policy, so I gave no thought to cleaning my plate. I honestly thought there’d be a cleaner, or a dishwasher or something. If that’s a lazy or evasive attitude, it’s still my honest knowledge I had then. Joe took great exception to the fact I hadn’t cleaned my plate. So, what did he do? Call me to remind me of the rules? Tell me that I’d pay a fine unless I cleaned my plate, which if harsh would’ve brought the message over? No. Upon discovering that I hadn’t cleaned up, Joe decided to stay 3 hours after his shift in order to have a go at me in person. He humiliated me face to face, like a schoolteacher telling off bad kid (“In my 25 years of hospitality, I have never…”) The reason I’d gone to Brighton was because of a commercial shoot, and I’d finished a day of 12 hours on set, and just wanted to not have the chaos of finding another place to stay, so I silently took it all in. He decided (like any tough mafia boss) to force me to say sorry in person. He couldn’t accept it over the phone. He forced me to sit there and take a verbal beating. Now, I’m not so stupid that I don’t get the motives. I get that to enforce the rules and make sure everyone looks after the hostel he has to get tough on those not following the rules (which, by the way, could’ve been signposted). I understand, also, that Joe may well have met several people in his time managing the hostel who he didn’t trust. However, to humiliate someone for a minor breach of an ethics code is, in my humble opinion, the lowest of the low. It ruined my recollection of an otherwise lovely, profitable and wonderful trip, and it ruined my perception of hostels. There is no excuse for lack of hygiene, but I honestly made the mistake unwittingly. There is definitely no excuse to humiliate a customer. Do not stay in this hostel unless you’re a fan of extremely hoarse, rude and disrespectful hospitality.
A great hostel

Excellent facilities, very comfy beds and lovely staff. Would highly recommend. Located in a great area, just minutes from the seafront. Perfect place to stay on your own or with friends. Will definitely be returning when back in Brighton.

Avoid staying here. The person who served us (Joe) was hostile from the beginning and escalated this into very aggressive and rude behaviour, literally shouting and swearing at us for minor issues. The main issue was a broken lock on the bathroom door - for which he took £40 from the security deposit (without providing a receipt). But he was disrespectful throughout, shouting at the group for things like trying to find a bathroom in the hostel or knocking on doors. I've rarely been treated so poorly by someone who works in a customer-facing role. Avoid this hostel!
