Terrified but pleasantly surprised

On arrival we read the trip advisor reviews. I immediately ripped the bed clothes back to inspect for bed bugs and became terrified the night porter might storm the room on crack and threaten us. Place needs a good refurb but very reasonable for the price. No bed bugs or staff on drugs..

Hoping that White Hart Management will acknowledge my communication.

My wife and I attended the Special Christmas Day Lunch at 12.30. I have emailed Marston's Guest Feedback and received a reply which I am not happy with and I've twice emailed the Manager at Exeter. I'm hoping to receive a reply from them in due course, as well as the Area Manager.

Lack of organisation

The whole group waited about half an hour to get their starter and took longer for the main to arrive. The vegetarian wellington was tasty but was rather odd to receive a bowl of carrots, sprouts and cabbage with no serving spoons, so people were using their own cutlery to get the vegetables which isn't very hygienic before or even after covid happened. Would have been better just to have the vegetables on each person's plate in the first place. The dinner was lukewarm by the time vegetables arrived and needed gravy for the vegetables too. There was a gravy boat passed round but would have been helpful if the waiter had pointed out that the gravy was vegetarian because not all gravies are vegetarian. The waitress looked fed up as she arrived with a plate of Christmas dinner asking who ordered it and ended up getting the host of the Christmas dinner group to sort out everyone's dinners which I think should be the waiters job not the customers'. The desert took even longer to arrive. I had a chocolate salted brownie and the salted caramel boozy ice cream was nice but it would have been nicer if the brownie was gooey and heated up instead of a cold brownie you could just pick up with your hand. Would have been better also to have had a drink with the pre- paid Christmas dinner instead of going up to the bar to order drinks separately. Nice pub but is let down by the staff and lack of organisation from the little things like remembering serving spoons and spoons for dessert and some people were eating Christmas pudding with forks instead! There wasn't a member of staff to ask straight away to ask for spoons either. This place needs friendly and efficient service from the staff to have a much more fun and uplifting Christmas dinner experience. I won't be back.

Not the best

Errr, where do I start....the hotel is ok buy very dated. As for the pub.....well....the food is well below average we hardly ate anything but wasn't even asked why....probably a good job. The beer is flat, and the staff more interested in their phones than serving
