We've just returned from our stay at this hotel. In short:
Nice hotel with charm. This hotel is situated next to a brewery and it is decorated with a few beer-related paraphernalia.
Good restaurant (typical local cuisine which is tasty; good variety for breakfast)
Spacious room (booked double room for 4 people [2 adults, 2 children] and got a very large room with partial wall divider so children had their own room)
Clean room upon arrival
Large bathroom with good hairdryer (normally hotels have small crappy one attached to wall unit)
Wifi hotspot very poor. Could not log into it often. Hotel advertises free wifi, so should do something about the wifi.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to stay somewhere which is not a typical chain hotel.
Delightful overnight stop along the Alpenstraße

Overdue review of a very worthwhile stop. In September, we were exploring the Alpenstraße, having started on the west end in Bad Reichenhall and worked our way back towards Lake Constance. Engel is in Isny im Allgau, along the Alpenstraße, and is a family-run guesthouse/restaurant/brewery with sufficient free parking in a lot behind the guesthouse. The large brewery is behind the guesthouse and across the street but doesn't interfere with the guesthouse in any way. Just means your beer is really fresh and delicious. Whole lake trout is a house specialty - amazing. Nothing fancy but if you are looking for a very reasonably priced (for a double room, including breakfast it was €79) quiet, clean guesthouse with generously sized rooms this is a great place. Make dinner reservations in the morning, restaurant is very popular with locals. If you don’t have reservations and it’s crowded, you share a table with other patrons. Happened to us the 2nd night and it was fun to meet some people. Check website for restaurant hours - it is closed Wednesdays (I think) and during midday.
Isny im Allgau is a small town with many shops, other restaurants and easy to walk around. Not a lot of English is spoken but everyone is friendly and worked with our poor German. Highly recommend.
Wintertime in Isny

It was snowing heavy as we arrived at the hotel, but the room was warm and the bed comfortable. The bedroom floor was bare wood, thank goodness we had slippers. All the staff were very pleasant, and strange to see a fridge, full of beer on the landing to all the rooms, which was unlocked, you just took a beer and added your room number to a list.
We only stayed 2 nights and as it was minus 12C decide to eat in the hotel restaurant. A good choice as there was a wide range of courses and beer from just behind the hotel. Recommended for a short stay.

On our way from Italy to Kassel we booked a room at Brauereigasthof Engel. Unfortunately we got stuck in the Italian summer traffic jams. When I called the hotel, explaining our fear of arriving after their latest check in time, this proved not to be a problem. Also our fears of missing dinner were easily solved: a really exceptionally good dish with bread, different meats and cheeses was put in our room. Drinks were available from a fridge in the corridor, with the request to mark on a list what we took. All in all: a great countryside hotel in the German style and tradition of hospitality, with good and clean rooms, good food and very friendly staff. Considering the really decent prices for a room, this was real value for money...
