Average but friendly
When we arrived, the twin room we had requested was made up as a double. The receptionist pulled the bed apart and made up the room as a twin. It was also dusty and had no tea/coffee in the holder. It was almost like they weren’t expecting us so not a great first impression. The breakfast is basic and the only thing on offer that appealed to me was toast. Cold meats, cheese and cold scrambled egg and cold potatoes were not appetising. The staff are very friendly and the room basic but clean. The TV had no signal. Someone came to fix it but within a few hours the signal had gone again. I’m afraid wouldn’t stay here again, despite the friendly owner.
Staff were helpful. Receptionist wasn’t fluent in English but was so sweet and helpful. He used google translate when needed. Other staff spoke English and were very friendly. Location was good-near many attractions. Breakfast was nice- could be varied. Room was clean. Only issue is there is a hill so it might be difficult for old people to go up the hill.
We were treated like family. A special place.
You can feel every ounce of care that the owners put into running their hotel. They truly had our best interests at heart, always, and couldn't help us enough. We arrived on an early flight from Sydney and turned up hours before check in, but they happily made our room ready within 15 mins. For our first visit to Turkey and traveling for over 24 hours, we were so happy to get a shower and relax straight away!! The owners are super friendly and as per other reviews, English is not their first language, but Google Translate was designed for a purpose and we all made excellent use of it, to converse and even joke. We were hugged like family when we left. Breakfast was included, it was sumptuous and there was lots of it, along with endless cups of coffee and tea... they had our order nailed without us asking by the second day. Despite other reviews, there IS a (small) lift, and the air-con in our room worked brilliantly at the height of summer. We had a sea view room, which was incredibly clean, large and had a comfortable king-sized bed. The hotel itself is located along quiet laneway, perfect for visiting pretty much everything the old city has to offer... about 10 mins walk to the Hippodrome. It is quite hilly in the area, but so is all of Istanbul, and the cobblestone streets are charming. And if my partly-disabled husband can suck it up and walk around it all day, I'm sure others with better mobility can too. Just take your time and be careful. Four Doors is located very, very close to a sizable mosque, so if you're from a predominantly secular/non-Muslim country like us, and aren't used to being awakened by a fairly loud call to prayer at 5am, take ear plugs. Or just enjoy the cultural difference. It's up to you. It wasn't a problem for us. We recommend this hotel very, very highly to those who are looking for an excellent quality option close to all the sights. A place where they'll treat you like family, if you let them.
Smallest room on earth
The manager told me : "you booked one single room" when I remarked that my single room 114 is tiny. Do I have to say anything else? In addition the TV is not working. Conclusion: never ever again 3 stars hotels in my life. I learnt the lesson.
My mum, my friend and I stayed for 3 days in May and we had the best time. The staff are so unbelievably friendly and go above and beyond. It's within minutes walk of the main Sultan Ahmet area. I couldn't think of a better place to stay and if I come back to Istanbul, this will be the first place I stay. Highly recommend! Thanks for such a fantastic time.
