More about the hotel
Scam artists, awful place.
We stopped at the Mayab Hotel on a day-long tour from Tulum. En route to the hotel and adjoining gift shop our tour-guide told us all about the history of the local Mayan community. We were told that a shaman would give us a blessing on arrival and that our purchases would contribute greatly to the local Mayan people. With that in mind we happily perused the gift shop and it’s offerings. A bracelet caught my eye and when I asked how much it cost I was told $1000mx. So I bought the bracelet and chatted to some of the employees. It was only the next day when I checked my bank account did I realise that they had charged me over $9000mx! I contacted the Real Mayab Hotel immediately and was in contact with one of the employees via WhatsApp for a number of days. I explained the situation and showed him photos of my receipts. He tried to negotiate a price with me through text (as he knew I had been scammed in the gift shop), and said he would get some of the money back to me. This continued for a few days until he stopped answering my texts and calls, and I heard nothing else from him. I also contacted our tour guides once I realised what happened. They assured me they would resolve the issue that day and gave me their mobile number so I could contact them. Later that afternoon I discovered they had given me a fake number. These guys are all in cahoots and are scam artists. The tour guides seem to take a cut from whatever purchases the visitors make at the gift shop, as I saw them siphoning through all the receipts while my tour was having lunch. When I told our tour guides that I had been robbed at the Real Mayab Hotel, he just replied “yes”. I can’t imagine I’m the first person this has happened to. It left such a sour taste after what was seemingly a lovely wholesome experience. Avoid Real Mayab Hotel at all costs!!!
Temascal a bonus experience
Revisiting after hours was interesting no staff other than watchman. totally looked after us. the next day i decided this would be a great place for a Temascal experience on March 22 2019 booked it. great breakfast not included in price negotated, but reasonznly priced. met Don Balam who will attend temascal. slipped and fell by pool as very slippery. still healing days later.
Gift Shop and Buffet
Our Chichen Itza tour group stopped in for a pre-arranged buffet lunch in this hotel. It was nicely done and the food was tasty with a good variety of local cuisine. Purchased jewelry from the on-site store in which there were many arts and crafts from which to choose and at a variety of prices. We were told that shopping and dining here supports the Mayan community.
OKay for an overnight stay
We recently returned from an Amazing self drive, self guided tour around the Yucatan with our family of 4. The only real plans we had were the hotel for the first night or two and the hotel for the last night, both of which I selected when making the flight reservations. I wanted something near Chichen Itza, but not quite as touristy as many of the places I found. I thought Real Mayab was going to be it. It was clean, staff was very friendly, and the rooms were comfortable enough, but we clearly weren't their target. While it has some bungalows (that were in a beautiful setting) and a handful of rooms, I believe it exists mainly for contracted tour buses on the way to Chichen Itza. they provide the same buffet lunch every day, and follow the same routine daily of opening up the gift shops, putting out drinks, and setting up the buffet, but it was definitely routine. While we had intended to use it as basecamp for a few days, we stayed two nights of 4 and moved on. I wouldn't recommend it for a long term stay.
Mixed feelings
The reason I have mixed feelings is because the beds in the bungalows were dirty and old. However, the service and hospitality was great. The property was beautiful and we'll kept. The best part was the breakfast. Try the cochinita pibil!
