More about the hotel
Dirty
Booked 3 nights with breakfast only to be told on arrival they don't do breakfast! The stairs were dirty and leaves had collected in the corners and doorways. The room was dusty and unvacuumed and my husband had to remove a cobweb from his face when he walked through the door. The bedding was creased and there were no mugs provided next to the kettle. The bathroom was filthy. Skidmarked toilet, no towels, floor had not been vacuumed or mopped in weeks. We booked this 4 days before arrival so it wasn't a spur of the moment thing where they hadn't time to clean. We left the room after 15 minutes as could not bear the thought of staying. Asked for a refund for which we are waiting from booking.com
Good food, basic accommodation
We arrived at this pub, wet and muddy, after walking 14 miles of the South Downs Way. There was no washing/drying facilities for our walking gear which was filthy. Accommodation very basic and we didn’t get to sleep until after midnight as rooms are located above the restaurant/bar area. On the plus side, we enjoyed a delicious pub meal served by Sammy, who was very friendly and attentive. Recommend to eat but not to stay overnight if you like peace and quiet.
Lovely, cosy authentic
Stayed for one night after visiting Eastwell Manor (3 mins away by car). We had a lovely room, very clean and with everything you would expect plus more- including a fan as it was hot! The room was a good size, and the bathroom was awesome- the same size as the room with a generous bath and shower combo. Breakfast was also great, generously sized, freshly cooked, lots of choice on the menu. Most of all, and sometimes hardest to find, the people working there were really friendly and helpful.
Disappointing
We stayed overnight on our walk to Canterbury. We had hoped for an early start but coming downstairs we found the main bar area locked and it took them half an hour to locate keys. Instead of an 8 o'clock breakfast we eventually had breakfast at 9. Very few apologies and nothing had been laid out the previous night. Our food the previous day was mediocre too. We shall not go back in a hurry.
Good country pub.
We were walking the North Downs Way and stopped here for some lunch. The pub serves Harveys Best and London Pride, both well kept. The lunch menu is extensive, if a little pricey. We had a very good Carrot & Rosemary soup and a Prawn & smoked Salmon Sandwich. A nice stop on a long walk.
