Amazing area in the middle of the jungle

Reviewed 8 february, 2021

The area is very big and in the middle of the jungle. The stuff is super helpful and friendly. The food was amazing and the pool areas big and clean. We would really recommend this hotel. The only thing is that you need a taxi boat to go to the "center"and the national park.

Decent place, lovely hosts, but a few shortcomings

Reviewed 4 april, 2020

We enjoyed our stay at Rana Roja, but I guess we had hoped for something a little better. The good things: the location is very atmospheric, as the website says right in the heart of the jungle. Sadly some of the jungle walk was off limits, but we enjoyed the monkeys and other wildlife. We were well looked-after by the friendly team. Our cabin was...OK...but they seem a little tired, ours had niggling electrical problems (though these were fixed). Likewise, the food - dinner and breakfast - was OK, but no better. The location has it's drawback - you'll need a boat/taxi to go anywhere, so spontaneity is dialled down. And lastly, the 'cash only' ethos was a pain. Advance warning that Tortuguero's only ATM had been stolen would have been useful. And not being able to charge drinks to your room is a particular nuisnace - we'd have bought more drinks for sure had that been possible. We DID enjoy our stay here...but sense there may be better options..

Wonderful experience

Rana Roja Lodge is a rustic resort set in the middle of the jungle. Exactly what you would expect. What I want to call out is the exception service from Ilsis and Jacob. They could not have been more accommodating. We were a group of 7. So many requests for different activities. Each time Jacob and Ilsis made them happen. They ensured that our stay was a unique and wonderful experience.

Nice lodge in a rain forest

Reviewed 23 february, 2020

We left our luggage in the bus and stayed here for one night with a small bag which was wise as small boats take you to the lodge. The lodge is hidden between the trees and you feel like you are in an isolated place, alone with nature. It was nice and quiet when we were there. Our bungalows on stilts were quite nice and the beds were comfortable. We used insect repellents just in case. We saw only a small part of the hotel grounds, looking at other reviews and photos, it seems it is quite large with 2 pools; we saw only one and didn’t have time to use it. We had an early boat trip for bird watching and saw quite a lot of beautiful birds. We had dinner on our arrival night, it was basic and not bad with salad, chicken and vegetables. They have a water tank where you can fill your warm bottles. After returning from our early boat trip, we had Costa Rican breakfast meaning rice and black beans and fruits. We were happy with our stay here for one night but I can’t imagine a longer stay here. Interestingly we had free WiFi here which was quite good.

Arriving here by boat was beautiful. A quaint platform with a cocktail bar and wooden carved stools. We had a small, basic but clean and well equipped bungalow. 2 lovely pool areas. Wildlife in abundance. Buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner. Very tasty good food. Receptionist couldn’t do enough for us. We used the canoes which were free. I’d highly recommend this lodge.
