A great small hotel in a fantastic location
A lovely local hotel in a great location convenient for walking to the river, Bairro Alto, Chiado, Alfama and Castelo and close to the Metro, the Trams and The Santa Justa Lift. The staff were fantastic, really friendly, welcoming and helpful, spoke very good English and went out of their way to ensure we had a good stay. If you are looking for the look and feel of a large hotel chain where the rooms are bland and the same across the world then this is not it. Some of the soft furnishings in the communal areas are a bit tired but the rooms and decor of this hotel offer a far more personal feel that, combined with the staff, mean I would definitely recommend The Hotel Metropole to my friends and would certainly return.
Great location, very good rooms
The location of Hotel Metropole is just perfect. From there many things you might want to visit are on walking distance, from Alfama and it’s fado restaurants, to the famous team line 28 and 12, but also several ‘elevatore’ trams. Must be said, when entering the hotel lobby on the 1st floor all is a bit dated, but it is clean, the staff is super friendly and will help you with anything. The rooms are clean, we had a room (#39) with view on Alfama and the castle, and a private balcony. Furniture again is dated, but the room spacious and clean, as is the large bathroom. There is more then enough space to store your persinal belongings. On our next visit to Lisbon we definitely will stay at Hotel Metropole again.
Needs a serious facelift!
The location is great, right in the heart of everything but the hotel itself hasn't had any attention since it opened. All furnishings are threadbare, sunken and sad. The breakfast was the worst of a month away and many hotels. The room was a good size including the bathroom but the upholstery, curtains, etc., need replacing. The bed was comfortable and clean - the only positive. Staff were friendly.
Hotel Metropole in Lisbon
I stayed in this hotel in Lisbon in Oct/Nov, 2019 Location: Excellent as the old town ( Alfama ) , metro stations, the river side , city squares & Cathedrals etc all are within walking distance so as shopping, train stations , pubs & restaurants. Full marks for location . Room: small old rooms with functional bathroom. The WIFI does not work in the rooms & available only in the lobby area, that’s bezzire. I think it’s not one of the most significant drawbacks while choosing this hotel for persons like me who wants to remain constantly connected . Rooms have no electric cattle/tea/coffee maker & a bit cramped though clean . So, it’s not actually a great value for money considering the relative high tariff . Breakfast : adequate volume of continental breakfast buffet is laid at the lobby level from morning 7-30 am. However if you are staying longer, the breakfast could be painfully monotonic as they serve the very same stuff every single day . Staff: Superb , very professional & helpful . Rarely you experience such courteous & helpful staff especially in Europe in this class of hotels. Restaurant: There is none apart from breakfast service . There is a small bar available though at the lobby level . But the location is surrounded by numerous eateries. Will I choose this hotel again ? I will come back to this hotel for sheer location if I have to . But other than that there is nothing really worth enticing a return to this property .
5 day holiday in Lisbon with friend.
We chose the Hotel Metropole for its location in Rossio Square. The areobus shuttle from airport stops opposite the hotel. It is no distance to get to hop on hop off buses and trams, and plenty of restaurants. Supermarket at the back of hotel for any provisions. As many of the reviews state the decoration, carpets and furniture could do with an upgrade. However the Dining area and Lounge are very pleasant rooms which overlook the square. We had a room at the front on the fourth floor, which was spacious, which included a shower and bath. Towels and linen changed regularly. If you want to use the safe you need to ask for the key. The staff are excellent, all speaking English, and very helpful, suggesting trips to go on and organising them from the hotel. Nothing is too much trouble for them, offering to print off Boarding cards for the return flight, and even carrying cases to bus stop if required. Because of the climate in Lisbon we were out and about daytime and evening so we weren't concerned that the decoration in the hotel was a little tired. We had a wonderful holiday in Lisbon. Thanks to all the staff for being so friendly. Obridaga Sheila and Brenda
