Extremely pleasant hotel in the middle of ancient sites

Spent a week there in April. First thing is the location. The hotel is not exactly in Luxor, but on West Bank, which is way less urbanized. You'll have to take either a taxi or an arabea (collective taxi) - and see the Memnon colosses on your way - then a boat to get to Luxor (expect a 15 minutes travel to get to the Luxor temple). You have Madinat Habu just round the corner, you can get to the Ramesseum or Deir el-Medina by feet. Kings and Queens Valleys are just a bit farther. The breakfasts on the roof were quiet exceptionnal. On one side you have view on the fields - and people working into them very early - and on the other side you have Madinat Habu and Al-Qurn, peak of the Theban Hills. At night, Madinat Habu and the moutains are enlighted and become magic. The hotel by itself has had its glorious times and now seems a bit tired. But it still is very comfortable, and most importantly the service is really good. Although employees do not speak perfect english, they are as helpful as possible. Staying only for a week, they granted us a large discount which made it extremely cheap. I highly recommand you to go to this hotel if you want to visit temples and tombs.

I forgot to review this hotel when we stayed in February 2010 but this date wasn't an option so have had to put now. I chose it because it is just round the corner from Medinet Habu. We only stayed a couple of nights as a treat in the middle of our ordinary package at the El Luxor. It was quite a contrast from a Luxor hotel catering for an international clientele. The room was on the small side but perfectly adequate with a small balcony overlooking the fields. It had a decent en suite with lovely dolphin taps on the sink. It did have the old fashioned scary ceiling fan - I never like the way they move about - and so was cool enough. The bed was comfortable too. There is a large roof terrace overlooking the fields towards the Nile but disappointingly you couldn't see the temple for the houses in between. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I hired a bike from the hotel (my husband wasn't feeling up to it) and they spent ages lowering the seat for me. It was glorious to be able to cycle around the sites; along as far as the Colossi of Memnon, stopping to view the excavations protected from the sparse traffic by large unlaid kerb stones then along to view a few more Theban tombs and on as far as the Ramesseum. I cycled back along the desert by the ticket office. When we left the staff kindly flagged down one of the local minibus pick-ups to take us down to the ferry. I don't remember much about breakfast so I assume it was OK but they were a bit flustered when we asked for an evening meal. They managed one for us and it fine as I recall. It was very nice to sit in the open area surrounded by the hotel. The public areas upstairs were cool, spacious and attractive. If you want a true Egyptian experience, you must stay at a hotel like this. It was pleasant and very inexpensive. The staff were kind and helpful and it is in a good location within easy walking or cycling distance of many sites. It is also possible to email the hotel for a booking.
