More about the hotel
Dress code in restaurant
There is apparently a dress code in the restaurant (which is a very good idea provided it applies to everyone) where men have to wear trousers and not shorts. The dress code does not appear to apply to some of the women who looked like they had just come back from the pool. It is not fair for men to wear long trousers and women can wear very little. We were short changed on two occasions in the restaurant when paying for our drinks. The price of the drinks are very high in comparison to the bars in the surrounding area. Most of the staff are a credit to the hotel with the exception of the "entertainment team" who are friendly if you are a member of their clique but ignore you if you are not. The evening entertainment does not start until 9.30pm and goes on past midnight. There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool and the area is kept spotless. The rooms are kept very clean and towels changed regularly. The headboard has an edge on it which makes it uncomfortable when sitting in bed watching the television.
Great hotel
We absolutely loved this hotel. The rooms are very spacious and the beds huge and very comfortable. It is a bit dated but it honestly doesn't matter at all. The rooms are lovely and the bathroom was fine. The hotel is located in the harbour and surrounded by lots of restaurants and a few bars. We ate out a fair bit but only because we like going out for a walk and a meal with table service. That said, the food in the hotel restaurant is outstanding. The choice and quality of the food is incredible and was actually better quality than the restaurants we went out to! The food in the snack bar was also very good with lots of choice. The portions are big so we sometimes shared and there was plenty. For us the big bonus was that there are loads of sunbeds whatever time you go to the pool. We never had any problem getting beds and had choice of where to sit too. Some people have said that it is a negative because the beds are close together but we went in July and the benefit of having beds available more than makes up for that. Plus, there were always beds away from other people if you wanted them so it really wasn't an issue for us at all. The hotel is adults only and so is quiet, which we like. The evening entertainment was ok. It is very typical hotel entertainment but probably a bit better than the average. You can charge drinks and food to your room card and this was really convenient and saved us having to carry cash in the day. However, the food and particularly drinks are expensive so that bill can really add up! Cala'n Bosch is not our favourite resort on Menorca and we were glad to be where we were on the harbour. Elsewhere it really is just villas and hotels with the vast majority of bars etc around the harbour area. We went on the land train to see what else there was around but there really wasn't much at all. We would go back to the Valentin Star, we loved it, but wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in this resort, it is a bit soulless. Great hotel, highly recommended.
Second visit
This review is really just conformation of all the good things that have been highlighted in other reviews. We stayed for 11 nights at the VSH late Sept/early October. Our 2nd stay(1st one 10 years ago!) It was my partners birthday when there and we were given a bottle of fizz by the hotel.Nice touch! As has been pointed out by other reviewers, the hotel is a bit dated, but dont let that deter you. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and spotlessly clean, the food is good and varied. The pool us large, theres a jacuzzi and there was no problem getting a sunbed at anytime. The real stars of the hotel are the staff. Friendly, efficient and hard working. All really good. We caught the local bus to Cuidadella which is a very nice old town.Well worth a visit. The hotel evening entertainment consists of 2 acts, one inside & one on the terrace outside. As we were there late in the season, the guesrs were mostly older. Don't know about earlier, All in all I would heartily recommend the VSH for a quality, quiet stay in a good location by the marina.
NOT A LA CARTE!!!
Been to many TUI gold/platinum/sensmar etc hotels on multiple occasions, the Valentin Star would NOT match up to any of these hotels. At best I could only say that this hotel is OK....and would have to say that we were disappointed?!?!?
2nd visit - still excellent!
Late booking - visit in early October. We had the same room as previously, overlooking the pool. Weather just right - not so hot as on our previous visit in 2018. Very relaxing after a busy summer here at home. STAFF IN ALL AREAS VERY PROFESSIONAL. Dining - food well presented and there is no need for guests to pile their plates high with every dish available! Staff clear your plates away and you may go for further helpings as often as you like. The chefs overseeing the supply of dishes on offer - always plenty to choose from. We cannot praise the hotel and staff highly enough - maids discrete - rooms cleaned everyday. Go out and look around the area - we discovered the train ride (bumpy over the pedestrian crossings!) worth seeing - there is more to the area than we had previously seen.
