repeating visit after 11 months

Reviewed 5 december, 2021

As we have loved Raffles very much as to be read in our former evaluation in German we have come back within one year for a second visit. Our evaluation moved from excellent to very good.... First of all the arrival was very promising as Raffles now operates with a new speedboat for the airport transfers which is much more comfortable than the old one.... we have enjoyed the two transfer trips very much. Meanwhile Raffles had a six week closure in the summertime in order to do some soft refurbishings. The most important thing they have changed are the tiles in the main pool. Last year the water in the pool was some kind of iron containing.... now the water is crystal clear.... a great improvement..... Also they have renewed the flooring in the villas (did not even recognize in the last year that this was necessary at all). They are about to build a kids club next to the Firepit Restaurant which unfortunately was not ready yet when we had been there against the information through the travel agency..... the kids care takes place in the Spa meanwhile. Raffles has appointed a kids tutor (last year the kids have been entertained by the butlers). Also they have transformed the Deluxe Beach Villas with a separate living room to Beach Residences with a second bedroom. So much about the improvements they have made..... what I wondered about, that within that closure they did not find the time to apply some new paint to the rooftops of the long bar and maybe the Thari Restaurant. It looks a little run down already - so do the daybeds at the main pool. Thinking of that I would also suggest to remove the plastic daybeds around Firepit restaurants and replace them by wooden daybeds as on the rest of the island. What else had changed since our last visit..... the most evident development is that the climate change has brought severe challenges to the island. While in the last year it was easy to do a 360° walk around the island, this has become impossible now. At some parts the beach has completely disappeared and the water will reach your belly button when going around at one point..... on the other hand there are places at the beach which are as beautiful as they have used to be one year before (Firepit area and Thari Area) - I have attached pictures to show the huge discrepencies you experience at several locations around the island. What else has changed? As I understood, more than 50% of the staff has changed meanwhile. We did not see so many familiar employees any more.... new General Manager, new Resort Manager, new director of F&B, many new waiters, our old housekeeper is working at Bolifushi now..... at least the peruvian cook Diana is still working in the Yuzu restaurant. We were happy to see her once more as she is still performing very well.... Yuzu is the best. :-) All those changes have led to the fact that the team is not that well-rehearsed as it was before. For example look in our last evaluation on the decoration on the bed on our last evening. This year there was nothing! Even 4**** island Filithey delivers that kind of attentiveness constantly. So in conclusion the direct comparison of the two trips has lead to a setback. But the Raffles Resort is still a nice place to spend your holiday. You still have a great villa with a great privacy. Food is still fine. Waiters are very friendly and attentive - especially Rahman. The breakfast is unbeatably great. As mentioned in another evaluation by another guest already the pricing for diving is ridiculous! One dive is 120 USD ++. If you want to dive with Nitrox it's another 30 USD ++. Boat fee will be on top. As an ambitious diver with the wish to do several dives during your holiday, I suggest to go somewhere else if you have to work for your money - the pricing has not been like that one year before.... I hope Raffles will find back to it's previous routine and is going to find solutions for the severe problems at some parts of the beach. Would we repeat once more? Maybe yes, but not short-term. We are going to observe the further development on the island.Weniger anzeigen

Wonderful honeymoon experience

Reviewed 28 november, 2021

We stayed in a sunrise water villa for two weeks and had a lovely time. We cannot praise the quality of the reef (so many sharks/rays and also turtles) and the beach highly enough. Our villa was huge, gorgeous, and very well appointed, absolutely wonderful bathroom and deck and the largest, comfiest bed ever. Although we did note some signs of wear possibly post pandemic eg issues with pool lights, thatch getting a bit tired after the storms, some minor storm leaks and sticky doors- however we did see maintenance very busily fixing things in preparation for the high season? Excellent food (almost too good!), especially at breakfasts- those bakery baskets are not to be missed. And the wait staff were excellent, attentive without being overbearing, particularly Angel, Asif and Asmael (apologies for spelling) at Thari. The team at Yuzu was also great. We did the wine tasting with Juan twice since we had such a good time. Other activities were also very enjoyable, lovely massages, watersports team for diving and snorkel trips also good and especially the marine biologist guided reef tour was excellent. Our butler, Yasir, was very attentive, particularly easing the check in/out process as well as the domestic transfers, and the one snorkel trip we had with him was fantastic. The boat crew who take people between the water villas and beach island are also great, including taking impromptu detours for dolphin spotting. Overall it was an absolutely delightful honeymoon that more than lived up to our expectations.

Amazing Resort

Such an amazing resort, all the stuff are great and our butler Yasir is amazing and helpful, the food was great , also the spa guy named Ansuman Das is professional. I recommend Raffles for 5 to 7 days to clear your head and enjoy your time. The water sport activities also was so nice.

Best place and food ever

Reviewed 23 november, 2021

Amazing place and food, especially the Peruvian restaurant, chef Diana is outstanding. If you look for a paradise this is the place. Great dive sites and water sports activities. The SPA is amazing too, everything is awesome (the boat that goes from the main island to bungalows has great music, the pilot is a good DJ)

Lovely Stay!

Reviewed 19 november, 2021

We spent some lovely days here. The whole staff was awesome and very friendly and helpful from the beginning. They made our stay special and memorable. Our butler Fasy was awesome, very caring and profesionnel. Fasy, thank you once again for taking such good care of us! :-) We spend our time there in one of the beach villas which was very spacious, clean and nicely furnished. There was nothing we missed. We loved the private beach access, the beach itself and the sunsets there. We snorkeled a lot there, the reef is intact besides the "normal" coral breakage close to the beach and you see a variety of fish including black tip sharks, turtles and smaller stingrays. We also rented a jet ski and drove with Banboo to the coral garden which is a very nice snorkel spot with many corals and more fish than closer to the beach. We even spotted a leopard shark. Also there are less broken corals there. The restaurants Thari and Yuzu are both excellent. Our favorite was Yuzu. It is Japanese/Peruvian and the chef Diana Matute is an outstanding talent. All her dishes are created with finesse, creativity and excellent knowledge of flavors and how to combine them. My favorite was the Nikkei breakfast, the ceviche and her sushi. Diana even created special menus for us on two evenings which we enjoyed a lot. Thank you for your attention and your awesome food. We already miss it :-) Another person who made our stay special is Suranti, she made us feel very special and welcome. She is very attentive, friendly, quickly witted and an absolute pleasure to talk with. Also she is doing an excellent job. The island itself is small and calm, perfect place if you want to calm down and relax. We loved it there and had an awesome time!
