More about the hotel
Efficient, helpful, clean, good restaurant
Some staff speak English, less than ten minutes from Mexico Norte bus terminal, hotel arranged taxi to airport at a very good price. Excellent wi-fi and al staff we encountered were friendly. The surrounding area, between the hotel and the bus station, is not "touristy" but it typical urban Mexcio and there are many places to get a snack, a taco, a torta, or a chicken.
Horrible experience
I booked this hotel because they said it was close to tourist areas in Mexico City... that couldn't have been more wrong. The area that they're in is so dirty and disgusting and unsafe. My uber driver even asked if I was sure I wanted to stay there. It's so far away from the heart of Mexico City where all the action is. I quickly cancelled my reservation 1 hour after booking it and the hotel would not give me a refund, not even a partial refund. Each time I called to speak to the manager, the rude receptionist said they were too busy to talk about this issue. Absolutely unacceptable considering they basically stole my money. DO NOT MAKE A RESERVATION WITH THIS HOTEL.
Cheap and Near the Metro
There's both a hotel and motel (same location). Be sure that you are booking what you want. It's walking distance to the northern bus station (used to get to the pyramids) and the Metro. The warm water was iffy on certain days and nice and hot on others. Basic accomodations at a reasonable price.
Walking distance to Terminal Central de Autobuses Del Norte
Hotel Cartagena is very close (about 5 min walk) to Terminal Central de Autobuses Del Norte, Room we have stayed in was very large with a huge comfortable bed in it plus bidet in a bathroom! I would highly recommend this budget hotel.
Never judge a book by its cover...
The further you venture from the airport area hotels, the lower your expectations take you. And mine were at their lowest ebb when I discovered the phone number I had for this hotel was somehow not operating; either I copied it down wrong or there was a phone malfunction. My cab driver didn’t speak a word of English, nor did he know where the hotel was located even after I showed him the address. And unless kitchen Spanish was part of the collective conversation, we were at an impasse, because I didn’t speak Spanish. He did manage to radio someone who gave him directions. Upon arrival I was met by the front desk concierge, Maricela. From the moment I stepped through the door and checked in, I knew in an instant all would be right in the world. Maricela, Grisenda, Anna Maria, Lolita, and Lupe immediately saw to it that all my needs wants and desires were met, and did so with smiles on their faces. But applause is definitely in order for Maricela and Mauro, who came to my aid by obtaining bus transportation to Michoacán to visit the Monarch Butterfly sanctuary, which was the purpose of my visit to Mexico in the first place. Without prejudice I would highly recommend this budget hotel to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable abode to rest their weary soul, kudos to the staff at Hotel Cartagena for looking after this accidental tourist who serendipitously landed on their doorstep.
