Stay at Penquin

David checked us in early after our cruise and made us very comfortable. They also gave us a late checkout. Rooms are very hipster. You can walk to the beach and they have pool behind the hotel. Nice veranda to sit and people watch. Not a big box hotel.

My husband & I have flown to South Beach for 7 years in a row. We've stayed in a different hotel every time; on Ocean Drive, Collins, Espanola Way. The Penguin offers the BEST location by far! You are minutes away from the night life on Ocean Dr. but removed from the noise we experienced at other Ocean Dr. hotels. The hotel & room was very clean. Bathrooms are small but also very clean. Staff is very welcoming & helpful. Free breakfast menu was limited but the food was good. Roof top swimming pool was a great bonus! The resort fee is very low compared to other hotels. The complimentary (paid for with your resort fee) bottled water & beach towels were great. They offered a late check out and have a luggage holding room which is very nice if you have time to enjoy before heading to the airport. We'll be staying at The Penguin in 2022 for sure!
Convenient location, dumpster fire ambiance

We chose The Penguin for the waterfront views and proximity to the rest of our plans. We were able to avoid renting a car (and paying exorbitant valet parking fees), and enjoyed the scenery by walking to our destinations. Our stay started off on a high note; check-in was speedy, pleasant, and accommodating, which we were grateful for after significant flight delays. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. We were fully prepared for a small, dated room as is typical of the historic South Beach properties. What we weren’t prepared for was our air conditioning unit dying on the first day of our stay. We returned from an afternoon out to an in-room temp of nearly 90 degrees. Maintenance was quick to respond and diagnose the issue, but the result was a freestanding unit with an exterior vent, which sucked all of the exterior smells of cigarettes, marijuana, and hot garbage into our room. While I understand that The Penguin isn’t the poshest property on Ocean Ave, when I pay a premium for a corner oceanview room, I don’t expect to have to choose between climate control and avoiding Eau de Dumpster. We brought our concerns to the front desk, but (if you’ve read the other reviews, this won’t surprise you) no manager was available, and we were asked to bring it up again upon checkout. The hotel was fully booked, so transferring to another room wasn’t an option…so, we dealt with it, trusting we’d find an appropriate resolution to the issue. When we checked out, we voiced our concerns again, and of course, the manager had just stepped into a meeting. I certainly wasn’t about to risk missing our flights to discuss the issue further, so I left my contact information and was assured that someone would follow up within a day or two. Here we are, over THREE WEEKS and several phone calls later, and I still haven’t spoken with anyone who’s in a position to address the issue. I will actively avoid The Penguin on future trips to Miami, and would encourage anyone who expects clean, comfortable accommodations and even consistently average customer service to do the same.
Terrible customer service

The penguin hotel is terrible , they never cleaned my room , no tea/ coffee, the swimming pool is dirty. They charge a resort fee, but breakfast is so limited and no flexibility at all. Management is no where to be seen , they certainly know how to charge and take advantage of guests. But have no time to deal with guests problems as long as they get the money. I do not recommend this hotel, I advise stay in downtown , the Marriott or Hilton and get a taxi to south beach , much better value. If you insist on staying in south beach, be prepared for sky high prices and limited service , as is how the penguin hotel operates

Great location just a block from the beach. Hotel staff is incredible with above and beyond service, try to make us as welcome and comfortable as possible. Thanks to Henry at the front desk who was awesome with everything he did and to Elliot the pool guy who was super friendly. Everyone one at the President Hotel is friendly and helpful. If we're ever in Miami again this is the place to stay.
